What I gain from my experience is working with my hands, building something that will have a lasting impact for the kids. I know when the project is complete the kids will enjoy it. It will bring smiles and laughter to them.
I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in a medical campaign in Antigua, Guatemala, and I cannot recommend this experience enough! From start to finish, this journey was both rewarding and eye-opening, providing hands-on medical experience while making a tangible difference in the community.
Partnering with the local team allowed us to combine our resources, medical knowledge, and passion for service with a local organization whose primary goal is to help underserved populations. Throughout the campaign, I had the chance to work directly with hundreds of people of all ages, from infants to senior citizens, addressing a variety of healthcare needs.
One of my key roles was providing education on oral hygiene, including proper brushing techniques, frequency, and cavity prevention. I also gained valuable hands-on experience in lice prevention and treatment by inspecting and treating several school-age children—an intervention that had a significant impact on the community. Additionally, I had the chance to engage with children in a fun and memorable way at a handwashing station. We even created a catchy nursery rhyme-style song to help reinforce proper handwashing habits, which the kids loved!
The most impactful part of this trip, especially as a medical student, was working one-on-one with a local physician. I was able to conduct physical exams, take patient histories, check vital signs, and develop my own diagnoses and treatment plans. This experience exposed me to a wide range of chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, dry eyes, high cholesterol, muscle pain, and even cases of Alzheimer's and dementia. Learning how to communicate effectively with patients and seeing firsthand how my knowledge could impact their lives was truly life-changing.
Beyond the medical work, my homestay experience was wonderful. We were provided with home-cooked breakfast and dinner every day, making it feel like a home away from home. The people of Guatemala are some of the kindest and most welcoming individuals I have ever met—always greeting you with a smile and eager to help. The food, coffee, scenery, and overall atmosphere made the experience even more special.
If you are looking for an opportunity to be a helping hand and a blessing to an amazing community while gaining invaluable medical experience, I 1000% recommend this program. This experience has left a lasting impact on me, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to serve and learn in such a beautiful country.
Don’t listen to what people say about the experience unless they have done it. I felt very safe and enjoyed every minute.
Volunteering through IVHQ is a safe way to travel due to support from both IVHQ and the local organization. It allows an opportunity to experience another country, language and culture with confidence that you still have support if you need it! I’ve done two programs now, and would not hesitate to go again!
I have gained many valuable things during my experience in Guatemala. The top one is the trust and friendship of local people. The second is the discovery of people’s generosity and approachability. The final one is the high level satisfaction for my contribution to Eco-farm and Antigua community. I am planning to go back in the near future 💖
Joining this program for the very first time was something out of my comfort zone. Not knowing where you will be assigned can be a bit nerve-wracking but knowing that you have a good support from IVHQ and the local team helps. Be positive and volunteering can be quite fulfilling.
Full immersion into a culture that you can not get by visiting. I am an older adult and was as welcome as the younger volunteers, which was an initial concern. Everyone at the local team's went out of their way to make sure I felt safe and comfortable.
I just returned from volunteering with the Dental program in Antigua Guatemala. It was an amazing experience for me. IVHQ had everything covered. My pick up at the airport was easy to find and the driver was friendly. My homestay was exceptional. My host made the most delicious meals and her family was very welcoming. The room and bathroom were comfortable and clean. The orientation covered everything I needed to know to work in the clinic. The local staff at the clinic was very patient and helpful and there was plenty of work to be done. Although I speak some Spanish, my language skills improved greatly through the immersion. I look forward to returning to Antigua Guatemala to volunteer again.
I was terrified before this experience but the team really stepped up to make everything easy. I would 100% recommend the Spanish lessons as it’s a really good opportunity to meet new people and learn another language - I really enjoyed my lessons. I did go with a friend but as we were on different schedules (she had volunteering in the morning and mine was the afternoon) so we had an opportunity to socialise independently and meet other people which suited us perfectly.
I have traveled to destinations with IVHQ that I never would have gone to as a solo traveler. With IVHQ you can have confidence that you will get to experience the thrill of a new culture and opportunity to be of service with the security of airport pick up and housing arranged.
