Project details
Do you believe that everyone should have food on the table? To have access to everyday necessities while maintaining a responsible waste system? If this sounds like you, then International Volunteer HQ’s Food Rescue project will be a perfect option for you to volunteer on.
Through this project, our goal is to combat hunger and reduce food waste in the local communities in Porto. This role is not just about food distribution; it’s a chance to assist communities, foster sustainability, and make a tangible difference in the lives of many. Join us in this fulfilling journey to create a hunger-free, waste-less world!
What to expect and how you'll make an impact
The Food Rescue project offers a remarkable opportunity to be an integral part of a dynamic community initiative dedicated to eradicating food waste and combating hunger.
As a volunteer, you will play a pivotal role in a widespread network that salvages high-quality, unused food from local restaurants and supermarkets. This recovered food is then thoughtfully redistributed to support various groups, including families, the elderly, and the homeless, who are in dire need of assistance.
Operating in the heart of Porto, the Food Rescue project makes a significant impact, providing nutritious meals to approximately 100 individuals daily.
As a volunteer, your responsibilities will be diverse and meaningful. They may include, but are not limited to:
- Collecting food from local providers (supermarkets and restaurants)
- Assisting with packaging of food
- Sorting the food distribution by the beneficiaries’ specificities and profiles
- Distribution of food
- Sorting and storing food
- Cleaning and organizing the center

Orientation begins on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Porto – an introduction to Portugal and Porto, culture and customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities, and an introduction to the project and placement, along with a tour of the local area. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.
A separate orientation dedicated to your placement will be held the following day. You will be shown how to travel to and from your placement, receive an introduction, and complete your volunteering hours.

Accommodation and WiFi
Volunteers in Porto are primarily accommodated in a cozy and welcoming hostel located right by the beautiful Douro River, in the heart of the city. With public transport nearby and iconic landmarks like the Porto Cathedral and Ponte D. Luis just a short walk away, you’ll be perfectly placed to soak up the city’s charm between volunteer shifts.
You will stay in dormitory-style accommodation, sharing with up to eleven other volunteers in mixed-gender rooms. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and en suite bathrooms. Each bed includes a reading light, power outlet, and secure locker for your belongings.
Bedding is provided, and towels can be rented at reception for a small fee. There’s a cozy lounge where you can relax and connect with fellow volunteers. Free WiFi is available throughout the building, although signal strength may vary in some areas. Many nearby cafés also offer free WiFi - along with great views and coffee!
In some cases, volunteers may be placed at an alternative centrally located hostel just a short walk from the historic city center. What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience
I met so many people from different backgrounds and learned so much about the world and humanity. The people of Portugal were so welcoming and just lovely!
I had a great experience! I do wish I had stayed in the program for a longer time, but my heart is full nonetheless. I met so many amazing friends who were volunteering with me. I wasn't expecting to be placed with people from other programs, so it was a pleasant surprise to room with other girls working on different projects, as I got to hear all about their experiences too. The locals working at the placement were extraordinarily kind and always available to answer questions about the program and their city. I gained a new curiosity for education worldwide. Seeing how the education system functions in a new place was incredibly interesting. Overall, I had a great time!
I learned about Portugal from the people I worked with, what they ate, how they communicate, and I even learned some Portuguese. I would tell someone who is hesitant that it is very easy to volunteer through IVHQ and that everyone is very supportive.
