Join International Volunteer HQ’s Childcare Volunteer Project in Porto and support kindergarten and preschool-aged children up to 5 years old. Engage children through play, creative activities, simple learning exercises, and daily routines while helping create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where they can build confidence, learn, and thrive.
By working alongside local educators and caregivers, you’ll help provide valuable attention and support to children while contributing to greater inclusion, equality and access to early education. Your involvement can help strengthen the emotional, social and educational foundations that are so important during a child’s early years.
What to expect and how you'll make an impact
Childcare support plays an important role in giving young children a safe, inclusive and stimulating environment in which to learn and develop. For families facing social or economic challenges, including young mothers, access to quality early education and care can be limited.
By supporting local educators, caregivers and young mothers, volunteers provide children with additional attention, interaction and encouragement. Through play, learning and everyday activities, your involvement can help nurture children’s confidence, emotional security, social development and curiosity during these important early years.
Some of the tasks involved in the Childcare project may include:
- Supporting educational activities and assisting local educators during daily learning sessions
- Providing children with care, comfort and positive emotional support
- Organising and participating in games, play and creative activities
- Assisting with mealtimes and supervising children throughout the day
- Supporting daily routines and helping maintain a safe, nurturing environment
- Taking part in outdoor and seasonal activities, including summer outings such as beach trips
- Providing additional support and encouragement to young mothers as they navigate motherhood
Your presence helps relieve pressure on families and childcare staff while giving children the attention and affection they deserve.

Volunteer requirements

Volunteers aged over 18 on their start date are required to provide a criminal background check to IVHQ before departure.
All volunteers must speak English and have adequate volunteer travel insurance.

This city is a tapestry of ancient charm and contemporary buzz. Wander through its serpentine, mural-adorned streets in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic center, where every corner tells a story.
There is so much to do!
You can hop on a vintage tram to where the Douro River kisses the Atlantic, discover sun-soaked beaches and chic outdoor cafés, try the typical “Francesinha,” immerse yourself in Serralves, and go to the famous library in the city center!
As night falls, the city transforms into a lively playground with an array of trendy rooftop bars, cozy cafés, and electric clubs.
Beyond its lively streets, Porto is the gateway to Northern Portugal’s rich tapestry of culture and scenery. It’s not just a city, it’s an experience!
Arrival and orientation
The program orientation begins on the first and third Monday of each month, and volunteers need to arrive in Porto on the Sunday before program orientation.
After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (Porto Airport) (OPO) in Porto on the Sunday before your program orientation. Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee.
When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Porto. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.
If you are traveling in Portugal prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up at a prearranged destination in Porto on the day before your program orientation.
Orientation is hosted by our Portugal team in Porto. Orientation begins on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Porto – an introduction to Portugal and Porto, culture and customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities, and an introduction to the project and placement, along with a tour of the local area. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.
A separate orientation dedicated to your placement will be held the following day. You will be shown how to travel to and from your placement, receive an introduction, and complete your volunteering hours.
Volunteer schedule example
First Day
You will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the placement staff you will be working alongside.
Weekdays
During the week, you will have a late afternoon or evening shift, which will last approximately 3-4 hours. Note that start times and daily workload will depend on your specific placement.
A typical day on the Childcare volunteer project is as follows:

Please note that the schedule may occasionally change due to weather, public or school holidays, or other unforeseen events that could affect your placement. We recommend checking in advance whether your intended travel dates coincide with any public or school holidays.
Weekends
Volunteers can travel and explore the eclectic city of Porto, Portugal. From visiting one of the oldest libraries in the world, catching a football match, or trying out a local francesinha, you can create an itinerary by yourself or with your fellow volunteers!
Volunteers staying in Portugal longer or who wish to travel before or after their program can visit areas further afield in Portugal, including Lisbon, the Azores, the Algarve, and many other places. With the advice and guidance of our expert local team, you can make travel arrangements once you arrive in Porto.

Accommodation and WiFi
Volunteers in Porto are primarily accommodated in a cozy and welcoming hostel located right by the beautiful Douro River, in the heart of the city. With public transport nearby and iconic landmarks like the Porto Cathedral and Ponte D. Luis just a short walk away, you’ll be perfectly placed to soak up the city’s charm between volunteer shifts.
You will stay in dormitory-style accommodation, sharing with up to 11 other volunteers in mixed-gender rooms. The rooms are air-conditioned, and each bed is equipped with a reading light, power outlet, and a secure locker for your belongings.
Bedding is provided, and towels can be rented at reception for a small fee. There’s a cozy lounge where you can relax and connect with fellow volunteers. Free WiFi is available throughout the building, although signal strength may vary in some areas. Many nearby cafés also offer free WiFi - along with great views and coffee!
In some cases, volunteers may be placed at an alternative centrally located hostel just a short walk from the historic city center. This backup option also offers shared dormitory rooms with en suite bathrooms, communal kitchens, and vibrant common areas. With modern amenities, free WiFi, and a friendly, laid-back atmosphere, it provides a comfortable and social base for your volunteer experience.
Meals
Enjoy a daily breakfast at the hostel featuring a selection of coffee, tea, dairy or soy milk, cereals, fresh bread with butter and jams, cheese, ham, and seasonal fresh fruit.
Lunch and dinner are provided at a nearby restaurant that prepares simple and tasty Portuguese meals using fresh, local ingredients. The menu offers a variety of dishes, and there are vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free options available upon request to accommodate different dietary needs.
If you have any special dietary requirements, please note in your application so the local team can make the necessary arrangements.
Vegetarian and vegan meals are typically available, as well as options for dairy-free, nut-free, and gluten intolerance diets. However, please note that due to the risk of cross-contamination, coeliac-safe meals cannot be guaranteed. Unfortunately, halal, and kosher meal options are also not available.
And don’t forget to treat yourself to Porto’s incredible local cuisine during your stay - it’s all part of the experience!

Weather and climate: Porto has generally moderate temperatures. The average annual high is around 20 °C (68 °F) and average low around 11 °C (52 °F). I feel like I achieved exactly what I went to Porto for which was helping in all ways that I could. But I also feel that I was fortunate to leave with much more than I expected.
Being proactive is a large component of the volunteering process, which is usually not in my nature. The volunteer experience convinced me to make the extra effort to not only teach the children new skills but to also connect on a deeper level with the moms which I could have never predicted would be possible with the language barrier.
Now, I am grateful to be leaving Porto knowing I exercised my best efforts to comfort and foster new connection, which was successfully achieved. Additionally, I met a lot of friends both part of the program and in the accommodation which I can say will be life long relationships.
I would tell anyone considering volunteering to be as proactive as can be and to use who you are as an advantage when trying to make a difference. You are more similar to others than you think.

When I go to another country to volunteer, I go with the intention of learning. I want to learn how the residents live their daily lives and how the programs I am volunteering in work. I have found the people at my placements are open to having volunteers and readily welcome me. I have learned a lot from observing the people and taking part in daily life in their countries.
Give it a try! It can be scary, but I have found people to be kind and helpful even though I am no where near fluent in their language. I also suggest to keep an open mind when it comes to food, but rest assured there is always something for everyone. If you are hesitant, click the submit button and give it a try!

I enjoyed volunteering for the Young Moms project. Within the week, me and some of the moms that I met, we learned from one another and empowered each other. Women need to support each other and continue to be kind to one another. I hope all goes well with these moms and want nothing for the best for them.
The local coordinator is amazing at keeping everyone well informed and checking in on the volunteers. It was a pleasure volunteering alongside another fellow female volunteer and share this experience together.
