Hill Tribes around Hua Hin maintain a traditional way of life, but have an increasing need for access to modern education. As a volunteer, you’re able to help support locals to live the lifestyle they desire, while also providing much needed help in English and other lessons. In return, you’ll get an authentic volunteer experience as you’re immersed in a Karen Hill Tribe, living like a local and learning all about their unique culture.
Based in Kaeng Krachan, just over an hour’s drive from Hua Hin, volunteers mostly help with lessons in local schools, working with students aged between 3-15 years old. The majority of your lessons will be teaching English, but you can also help with other subjects, as well as providing after school activities and games for students.
Volunteers can also help in other areas that need assistance, often in supporting local enterprise efforts designed to earn income for the community. The exact nature of this volunteer work depends on the requirements at the time.
This project is well suited to volunteers who want to experience a new culture from the inside, while also contributing something to the community. Kaeng Krachan is a stunning National Park with amazing views, walks and lifestyle that can’t be replicated anywhere else. You should expect basic but comfortable living conditions, with no WiFi. Internet is available if you purchase a local SIM card.
The project will close in school holidays from mid-May to mid-March and in October. Volunteers during these times can help to run classes and English camps in Hua Hin.
As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course.
