Volunteer in under-resourced elderly care facilities for those who need support, but can’t get it from their families. Provide general care and assistance in a range of areas where help is needed.

Elderly Care in

In Zambian culture, it’s common for elderly people to move in with their family or extended family when they are unable to care for themselves. Unfortunately, some senior citizens face abandonment if they have no family, or if their family is unable to provide for them. This can be due to financial issues or if the health needs of the elderly are beyond the family’s capability, and is sadly all too common.

Elderly care facilities help to provide care for people who struggle to find the help they need, and volunteers play an important role in helping these centers to provide their services. However, they can be badly under-resourced, and volunteers help is needed with all matter of general tasks such as caring for the elderly, serving meals, general maintenance, cleaning and gardening.

Elderly Care volunteer in Zambia with IVHQ

Your role will vary but it is important to note that you must be willing to work independently, and use your initiative. Many of the elderly people are ill or disabled, and the best care you can give is help with domestic chores and general companionship. The facilities are generally unstructured, but need support all the same.

This project is well suited to caring and compassionate volunteers who are interested in providing assistance wherever their help is most needed within a elderly care facility. As you’ll be volunteering under the guidance of local staff, you don’t need to have prior experience in caring for the elderly, though it is highly recommended.

Kindergarten in

A large number of children in Zambia live under the poverty line, and many of these children suffer from poor hygiene, inadequate education, insufficient food and little healthcare. Individualized attention and a focus on early development and education are considered crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty. While this much is known, the help of international volunteers is vital to ensure it actually happens.

As a volunteer in kindergartens in Zambia, you’ll provide extra assistance to local staff, for children aged between 2-6 years old. You can expect to teach basic English and math, helping to develop children’s confidence that, in turn, encourages their future education.

In addition to teaching, you can also help with mentoring, homework, preparing meals, organizing activities, cleaning and the general running of the center.

This project is well suited to volunteers who love working with younger children and have a passion for education. You’re also encouraged to bring your creativity to the classroom to help stimulate the children’s learning.

You’ll be volunteering with the support of local staff, so don’t need to have prior experience working with children.

Volunteer in medical centers in low income communities, shadowing and assisting local medical staff. Volunteers with relevant experience can assist in a range of medical fields.

Medical in

For people who live in low income communities in Zambia, healthcare is neither accessible nor affordable. There have traditionally been very few medical clinics in these communities, but this is starting to change. More and more clinics are beginning to open, and now they need medical staff and volunteers to help them to provide quality healthcare.

As a Medical volunteer in Zambia, you’ll shadow and assist local medical professionals, gaining an understanding of the local healthcare system and helping to provide care. Language barriers and local laws mean volunteer work needs to be supervised at all times, so it’s important to have realistic expectations for what you’ll actually be doing.

Medical volunteer in Zambia with IVHQ

The clinic you’re placed in will depend on your level of expertise and experience. It’s possible to assist in a range of medical fields including laboratory testing, pharmacy, maternity, gynecology and family planning, optometry, HIV/AIDS, nutrition and pediatrics. If you have an interest in any of these areas, please mention that in your application, though your placement is ultimately decided by the Zambian Ministry of Health so we can’t guarantee you’ll be volunteering in your preferred department.

This project is open to fully qualified doctors and nurses, as well as students in nursing or medical school. You’ll need plenty of initiative and enthusiasm, and be ready to volunteer in basic facilities with limited resources.

Medical volunteers must bring proof of your relevant qualifications, training or certification with you to Zambia, as well as scrubs of any color to wear. The Medical project has a one-off surcharge of US$100 (approximately CA$135) which goes to the Zambian Ministry of Health for use in the public health sector. This will be included in the program fee quoted to you after applying. Most clinics are located 4 to 7 miles away from the volunteer house and volunteers use local taxis to commute, which costs approximately US$5 (CA$7) for a round trip.

Rural Teaching in

If you’re looking for a teaching project in Africa that goes beyond the ordinary, then the Rural Teaching project in Zambia is exactly what you’re after. This is an immersive volunteer experience where you’ll be based in a Zambian village, getting a unique insight into African life while making a real difference in the education of children.

Volunteers are based in the village of Makumba, 40 miles from Livingstone. You’ll live as a member of the community, experiencing an authentic lifestyle and volunteering to support teachers in local schools.

You’ll assist local teachers in a school of around 200 students, who range in age from 4-18 years old. Aside from volunteers, international volunteers are rare in Makumba, so your perspective and English language skills are particularly valuable. You’ll be primarily helping with one-on-one tuition and occasionally leading lessons.

You can expect to assist in a variety of subjects including English, math, science, geography, history, art and physical education. Due to the high demand for support staff and teachers in Zambia, you can expect to be volunteering for full days on a variety of different tasks and subjects. You’ll also help with general duties in marking, helping with homework, playing games and supervising during breaks and exams.

As volunteers are supporting local teachers, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage you to come prepared by completing some relevant training. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

You’ll also get a unique cultural experience outside of your volunteer hours. You’ll stay in a homestay with a local family, living in a basic house with dirt floors, no electricity and an outdoor toilet. Your homestay will be based around three miles from the school, and you’ll need to walk there each day.

Volunteers can also expect to help out around the homestay with tasks such as the general running of the home, including cooking, cleaning gardening, molding bricks, milking cattle, collecting firewood, collecting water from the well, feeding chickens, collecting eggs and harvesting crops.

Please note that the Rural Teaching project has an extra one-off cost of US$200 (approximately CA$270) for the additional transport, supervision and logistics involved in this project. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

Teaching in

Due to Zambia’s rapidly growing population and shortage of teachers, locals have informally developed ‘community schools’ to serve the need for education. These schools commonly offer free admission to students, many of whom are orphaned or living with elderly family members who can’t afford school fees. As a result, they’ve become hugely popular and often have up to 60 students per teacher.

When you volunteer as a teacher, you’ll help in all aspects of schooling, easing the pressure on local staff and improving the quality of education they can provide. You’ll assist local teachers, peer teach with other volunteers or provide personal attention as tutors for students who need extra help.

Teaching volunteer in Zambia with IVHQ

Your role is primarily to teach English, however there are also opportunities to teach other subjects such as math and science. You can also help to supervise during exam time, and assist with extracurricular activities including sports, music, dance, art, gardening and nutrition programs.

If you are someone who is an aspiring teacher or have a genuine passion for education and helping out wherever possible, this is a great project for you. There is great demand for teachers and support staff in Zambia, so you may find yourself working full days, in many capacities at your placement.
