Daycare centers are important bases for families and children in rural neighborhoods around Mombasa, such as Likoni and Ukunda. Children from these communities are often disadvantaged, and these centers provide a welcome place for them during the day, taking pressure off other family members that go to school or work.

Volunteers help in daycares and primary schools, improving the quality of childcare on offer and making them safer and more enjoyable. Your tasks can include cooking, cleaning, feeding the children as well as entertaining, caring and playing with them. You’ll also help with giving them an informal introduction to the English language. Each center caters to children of a different range of ages, but you can generally expect to be working with children between 1 and 6 years old.

Kindergartens in Nairobi can host between 15-100 children at any one time, making them unpredictable and lively places. As a result, there is a high demand for volunteers who love children and have the energy to keep up with the number of children. The children love interacting with volunteers and will be sure to keep you on your feet!

Kindergarten volunteers in Nairobi can expect to help out with the day-to-day operations in a range of pre-schools, daycare centers and kindergartens. Each center caters to children of differing ages, however, you will typically work with children between 1 and 6 years old.

Special Needs Care in

Due to a lack of support and education around disability awareness in Kenya, many disabled children and adults are hidden from public view by their families. The Kenyan culture is built largely around family values and beliefs, and it is expected that children should be able to contribute while at home and ultimately provide for themselves when they reach adulthood. However, there are large numbers of children born with disabilities, who don’t have access to support and can’t provide for themselves. There are also many Kenyans who become disabled through the course of their lives.

Special Needs Care volunteer in Kenya with IVHQ

When you volunteer with disabled people, you’ll provide hands-on support and disability education among families and local communities. Your tasks will depend on your experience and any relevant qualifications but may include assisting with physiotherapy and rehabilitation, teaching, general supervision, interacting and providing training for the family and their community. You’ll also help at meal times, preparing and serving meals, and cleaning up afterwards.

This project is well suited to caring and open minded individuals, with an interest in helping those with special needs.

You aren’t required to have previous experience in special needs care, as you’ll be working closely alongside local staff. Relevant experience is required for physiotherapy tasks.

Sports Education in

Sport plays a big role in the lives of young, enthusiastic Kenyans. Many children grow up with very little, but by using sport as an outlet for fun and competition, they gain skills and coordination while enjoying themselves at the same time. As a volunteer on our Sports Education project, you’ll help to broaden their knowledge of sports, teach foreign sports and educate them about general fitness, health and wellbeing.

Sports Teaching volunteer in Kenya with IVHQ

Volunteers are based in schools, helping local teachers to organize and run sports activities. You can help with popular local sports such as soccer, basketball and volleyball, or teach sports from your home country like baseball, lacrosse or football. You may need to plan ahead and bring some materials or equipment with you, as it’s unlikely you will find this equipment in Kenya. The children are extremely enthusiastic and willing to learn, and it’s important to come prepared with your own lesson plans.

If you’re someone who has a passion for sports and wants to work with children in schools, but would prefer not to spend all of your time teaching in a classroom, this project is well suited to you.

As you will be volunteering alongside local teachers, you don’t need any previous teaching experience, however it is important to note that you may be required to teach other classes such as math, English, science or social studies.

Please note, this project is not available during the school holidays, so if you apply during this time you will be switched to either Special Needs Care or Women’s Education.

Teaching in

With the introduction of free primary school education in Kenya, the Kenyan government was faced with a dilemma: a larger number of students with access to an education and not enough teachers to accommodate the growing class sizes. The majority of Maasai schools are required by law to have at least one teacher per class, however low teacher numbers mean there are often up to 75 children in one class.

The Maasai Teaching project is based approximately two hours south-west of Nairobi in rural Maasailand. You’ll be based in schools, helping teachers to manage large classes and delivering a better quality education to students between 4-15 years old. On top of that, you’ll have an immersive cultural experience in the African heartland.

Teaching volunteer in the Mombasa, Kenya with IVHQ

Teaching volunteers in Maasai assist with a range of lessons each day, including math, English, science, social studies, geography, history, art and physical education classes. You can help to provide one-to-one assistance for students who need it, and relieve the teacher of a class or two per day.

This project is for volunteers looking for a teaching experience like no other. Giraffes, gazelles and dik-diks often wander freely across the school grounds. It’s also not unusual for wild animals to burrow holes in the school field overnight.

This project is open to all volunteers - you don’t need to be qualified or an experienced teacher to participate on this project as you’ll be under the supervision of a local teacher. However, we encourage you to come prepared by completing relevant training, such as a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Teaching in

Many schools in underprivileged areas of Mombasa are run on extremely tight budgets, but the education they provide is critical to helping give children opportunities to escape the poverty many of them have grown up in. Volunteers make up an important part of the education these schools provide, simply by being teaching assistants that can help students achieve more.

As a volunteer teacher in Mombasa, you’ll be based in community schools in slum-like areas around the city. You’ll help local teachers in daily classes in math, English, science, social studies, geography, history, art and physical education. Students will range in age from 4-15 years old.

Teaching in

Teaching volunteers in Nairobi are hugely valuable additions in both local and rural schools. Outside influences open the minds and broaden the horizons of students, as well as provide valuable exposure to the English language.

Volunteer placements are located in both community schools and government schools, where you’ll assist local teachers with lessons in a range of subjects, including math, English, science, geography, history, art and physical education. Classes can be large and under-resourced in Kenya, so having volunteer available to assist makes a genuine difference both to the education students receive and the pressure on local teachers.

You’ll also help outside the classroom, providing support with preparing meals, feeding students and anywhere else you’re needed.

This project is well suited to aspiring teachers as well as volunteers with an interest in education and supporting youth development opportunities in disadvantaged communities.

Women's Education in

Gender inequality continues to be a challenge in Kenya and it impacts not only women, but also their children and families for generations to come. However, community centers play an active role in enhancing the prospects of women by empowering and supporting them to become self sufficient.

You’ll be based in community centers in the neighborhood of Bamburi, providing support, mentoring, skills training and education for women needing help with small business management, financing and educational development. This helps to increase independence among women, which, in turn, allows them to better support their families.

Women's Education volunteer in Kenya with IVHQ

Most women are involved in making a variety of handicrafts including baskets, sewing, tailoring and jewelry, and the things they make are then sold for income that helps them provide for their families. Volunteers who enjoy arts and crafts or have a background in managing finances or small business projects are perfectly suited to assist on this project.

As a volunteer, you’re encouraged to create training material on topics such as managing finances, vocational skills and building self-esteem to ensure future generations can continue to receive support and training. You can also help with childcare-related tasks, as some women bring their children to the center.

Please note the Women’s Education project in Mombasa has a one-off extra cost of US$100 (approximately CA$135) for the additional transport, supervision and logistics required. This will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

Women's Education in

More than 1.6 million Kenyans live with HIV/AIDS, and women make up a disproportionately high percentage of that number. As a volunteer on the Women’s Education project in Kenya, you will work closely with centers that support women affected by HIV/AIDS in providing companionship, guidance and sometimes childcare. The primary aim of this project is to empower women through income-generating projects, education and skills training.

Volunteers assist in a range of areas, including counseling, skill training and providing education. This project is particularly good for those with skills and interests in arts and craft-making, as well as an interest in supporting women to become self-sufficient.

Women's Education volunteer in Kenya with IVHQ

At many of the centers, women are able to learn sewing, tailoring, candle-making and jewelry-making through subsidized courses. The women also have access to finance and small business management courses, enabling them to start their own craft-making or tailoring businesses to generate an income and provide for their families.

Not all of the women this project works with suffer from HIV/AIDS; some have joined the centers to help improve their overall living situation and learn vital skills to help become self sufficient. You may also help on outreach work in wider local communities and slum areas.

As you will be volunteering alongside local staff, you don’t need to have experience in HIV/AIDS support or women’s education, however it’s strongly recommended that you gain some understanding of these areas prior to your arrival in Kenya.
