Carnival in

Carnival is an event that breaks all economic and social boundaries – a love and passion for Samba makes everyone equal. The Carnival project enables volunteers to join the preparations and embrace the hard work involved in getting ready for one of biggest parties on earth!

Samba schools competing in Carnival have a full year of intense work to prepare the many costumes, floats, music and dances for the celebration, and volunteers are invaluable in helping with the many hours of preparation.

This project is well suited to creative volunteers with a flair for decoration and craft, as you will be helping some of the leading Samba schools in the creation of costumes and floats. Samba schools are born from the local favelas (urban slums) and most of the schools take their names from the community they represent. Each school unifies and proudly represents people from that community and all Cariocas (Rio-born Brazilians) also have their favorite school.

Carnival volunteer in Brazil with IVHQ

You don’t need to have any experience in costume or stage design, just a willingness to work hard at sewing, cutting, pasting and other craft-oriented tasks to help out with the costume and float design.

While volunteers are hard at work, they can also engage in Portuguese and English language exchange with fellow workers.

Please note that the dates for Carnival change every year - it’s held 46 days before Easter - and in 2020 it is on February 22-26. Participation in the actual parade is not included in the project, however volunteers may come across this opportunity at an additional cost by arranging this independently once in-country. This project is available between October and February each year.

Childcare in

Supporting the development of children is one of the most beneficial ways to increase the quality of life for children living in Brazil, a country with one of the most pronounced gaps between the rich and poor. This is especially the case in the favelas, neighborhoods where thousands of people grow up with little money and few opportunities.

Children in Rio de Janeiro attend school either in the morning or afternoon, leaving them unsupervised for long periods of time if their parents are at work. The aim of this project is to ensure children have a safe and supervised environment to use this time constructively.

Childcare volunteer in Cordoba Argentina with IVHQ

As a childcare volunteer, you’ll help to ensure children have access to the care and attention needed to develop their social skills. You’ll help to run activities and lessons in community centers, where there are often many children per staff member. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring enthusiasm and creativity, and use the opportunity to teach basic English phrases, which will be valuable later in life.

If you’re someone who is caring and attentive, and loves working with children, this project is for you.

Teaching English in

English is a language that isn’t spoken much in Brazil, but the ability to speak it opens up a range of job possibilities. This is seen as especially valuable in poorer communities, where opportunities are often limited and even fewer English speakers are available to teach the language.

Volunteer English teachers are needed to host lessons in a much more informal environment than in normal schools. Classes are based in community spaces, meaning you’re free to be more creative with your lessons, which are generally run for small classes of students ranging from children to adults.

Teaching volunteer in Brazil with IVHQ

You can either act as a lead teacher or assist local staff. The inclusion of a fluent English speaker makes a tremendous impact on language acquisition.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are fluent in English and have a passion for education. You aren’t required to have prior teaching experience, however we do encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Please note that there is a minimum duration of 3 weeks for this project.
