This program is ideal for:

Volunteers who genuinely love working with children and understand their behavior. Be prepared for a lot of noise, laughter and excitement. You’ll be volunteering alongside experienced local staff so no previous experience is necessary.

Project details

Want to volunteer in Childcare in Bali - Lovina? International Volunteer HQ’s Childcare project gives volunteers the opportunity to help look after young children and share valuable English language skills with them. Volunteers gain childcare experience and have the chance to explore Bali’s charming coastal villages, while the children get to improve their English in a fun and interactive way and learn about other places and cultures.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Being a little off the beaten track, Lovina gets fewer international visitors than other more crowded parts of Bali. This means local children get less exposure to foreign languages and cultures and are less likely to have chances to practice speaking English. Your involvement as a volunteer will be a valuable part of the children’s education and help them learn basic phrases and language skills from a young age.

As a Childcare volunteer in Bali you’ll help local teachers with English learning and general lessons for children between the ages of 4 and 6. This program runs for two hours each morning with two hours of lesson planning in the afternoon.

Childcare volunteer work varies but usually you’ll be:

  • Assisting local teachers
  • Playing with and caring for children
  • Setting up activities and games
  • Sharing your language and culture

Important dates to note for 2025:

  • 21st of April to the 2nd of May 2025 - During this time, the standard volunteer work is not available. Volunteers instead participate in cleaning, repairs and renovation activities in local schools for approximately 4 hours a day and have the remainder of their time free to enjoy the festivities.
  • 2nd of June to the 1st of September 2025 - Due to school holidays, the Childcare project will be closed.
  • 17th of November to the 28th of November - During this time, the standard volunteer work is not available. Volunteers instead participate in cleaning, repairs and renovation activities in local schools for approximately 4 hours a day and have the remainder of their time free to enjoy the festivities.
  • 22nd of December 2025 and to the 2nd of January 2026 - Due to school holidays, the Childcare project will be closed.

Why do Childcare volunteering in Lovina with IVHQ?

While volunteering in early childhood education in Lovina, you’ll be adding value to the local community, while also developing personally and professionally by:

  • Providing a safe space for children to learn
  • Sharing your language and culture
  • Learning the Balinese way of life
  • Developing your communication skills
  • Gaining childcare experience
  • Exploring Bali’s quieter northern coast

Volunteer requirements

  • All volunteers joining the program must obtain the C6B Social Cultural Visa. This type of visa is required to join the program, no matter your nationality or duration in Indonesia. The visa has additional costs and can typically take up to 15 working days to process and once registered you will be provided with instructions on how to apply for this visa.
  • An exception to the above applies if a volunteer will be in Indonesia for less than 30 days and opts to participate in the Introduction Week or the Yoga and Meditation Week along with one or two weeks of volunteering. In this scenario, the volunteer can join with a tourist visa, which can be obtained upon arrival, for most nationalities.
  • To respect the local culture and customs in Bali, volunteers should be aware that they’re unable to have anything obstructing their face while at their volunteer placement.
  • Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate in this program
  • Volunteers aged 16 or 17 on their program start date are required to provide IVHQ with parental consent in order to participate on the program, and may be asked to provide additional documents to the local team.
  • All volunteers aged 13+ are required to provide a criminal background check to IVHQ prior to departure. Those aged 13-17, if unable to obtain a criminal background check, can provide two character reference letters instead
  • All volunteers are required to have adequate volunteer travel insurance
  • All volunteers must speak fluent English.

It’s the perfect balance between volunteering and free time. You can help out the community half of the day then go out and learn about the country or place you are volunteering at.

If someone was hesitant about joining IVHQ, I would recommend they jump in with both feet and go with it. The team do everything to ensure you are and feel safe and I've truly never grown so much as I did whilst working with IVHQ. Everything from the flights to the program to the people you meet to the adventuring forces you to be independent, to understand the world and to be grateful for what you have and I can't recommend the experience enough. I truly believe that without IVHQ I wouldn't have met some of my closest friends, I wouldn't have made some of the best memories of my life and I wouldn't be the person I am today. I didn't realise how much of an impact working with the children would have on me as a person and my understanding of the world.

It's an experience that I will take with me everywhere I go. The local team in Lovina was amazing! The best moment from the volunteer experience was learning about the culture and going to the tourist parts. The biggest impact my volunteering trip had on me was the kids, I'm gonna miss them.

My best moment from the volunteer experience was the children were beautiful, genuine and amazing. The time with them was beyond satisfying. The local staff were exceptional. The biggest impact my volunteering trip had on me was my belief in myself, personally I have had a very very tough few years. Volunteering trip brought many of my difficulties back into line. I wished I had stayed a lot longer than my two weeks. It is nerve wracking at the beginning, but life changing as it progresses.

Lovina is a charming coastal town located on the northern coast of Bali, Indonesia. The volunteer accommodation is a short stroll away from the nearest beach and the heart of town. Volunteer placements span various nearby locations, ensuring easy access with travel times ranging from 5 to 45 minutes. This allows volunteers to immerse themselves in their projects while savoring Bali’s beauty. Lovina offers a serene escape from the bustling crowds of southern Bali, showcasing black sand beaches, serene waters, and breathtaking sunsets. Lovina is famous for dolphin watching, where visitors can witness playful dolphins frolicking in the early morning hours. With its relaxed vibe and natural beauty, Lovina is the perfect destination for travelers seeking tranquility and exploration in Bali.

Arrival and orientation

The program orientation will begin on the Monday of your start date and volunteers need to arrive in Bali on the Sunday before orientation.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport (DPS). Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee should you arrive between 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Saturday or Sunday, before your start date. We recommend that volunteers under the age of 18 travel internationally with a notarized letter from their parents to support their documentation.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Lovina. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the Sunday night. If you are traveling in Bali prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Denpasar on Sunday.

It is important to note that due to high capacity during the period from May 27th to September 7th, 2024, the local team requests that volunteers only arrive on Sundays to receive an airport pick-up. As the volunteer house cannot accommodate additional nights for early arrivals before Sunday. If you happen to arrive earlier, you are welcome to arrange your own accommodation until Sunday when you can meet the local team at alternative pick-up locations. This also applies after the program, as check-out is scheduled for Saturday.

There are two options for orientation on the Bali - Lovina program.

1-day Orientation:

This begins on your selected start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program. You will have an introduction to the IVHQ Bali - Lovina Program and the local staff, Indonesian customs, rules, expectations, and safety. This will be followed by a project-specific meeting with the project preparation you’ll need to complete for the following day.

5-day Introduction Week:

The Introduction Week begins on the morning of your chosen start date and runs for the first five days of your stay. It is an awesome way to kickstart your volunteer abroad experience and it covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Bali, plus you’ll learn more about the culture and get to tick off a must-do Bali experiences! The Introduction Week will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.
