Many community preschools and schools in impoverished areas in South Africa are unable to provide effective programs due to a lack of funding, resources and skills. Well-meaning local staff can be over-run by the workload of catering for large numbers of children, and volunteers make a real difference in enabling them to deliver the quality service they strive for.
As a volunteer in kindergartens, you’ll help preschools in disadvantaged communities, assisting local staff with teaching and caring for children who range from a few months old, up to 6 years. You’ll provide fun activities that help with development and learning, and have flexibility to use your own ideas in lessons and games.
You’ll also spend time supervising children, feeding, assisting with nap time and general chores.
As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course.
Preschools are closed for the school holidays in January, April, July, October and December. If you apply for the Kindergarten project during these times, you will be switched to the Holiday Club project, or you can help out with activities on the Kindergarten project.
