Add-ons and experiences available in Zanzibar

Volunteers on the Zanzibar Coastal and Marine Conservation project are typically accommodated in semi-permanent fully furnished tents in a camp located just a 3 minute walk from the beach and just a 5 minute walk from the camp. However, if you were interested in having your own space near the camp instead, then this accommodation upgrade may be perfect for you!

Each private room has its own double bed, en-suite bathroom, and Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen, and a sitting area.

If booking with another person, only one person needs to buy this upgrade and please contact your Program Manager to inform who the other volunteer is that will be using this upgrade.

Please note: 
- There is no restaurant or meal service available (all meals are taken at the camp). Volunteers should also be aware that there is a friendly dog on the bungalow property. 
- There is a minimum age requirment of 12 for this upgrade.

When booking this upgrade you can enjoy privacy with your partner, friend or family if you are volunteering on the program together. Please note that this upgrade is only available for groups of 2 and more volunteers (up to 4 in one tent).

Be part of hands-on reef conservation! During this dive, you’ll visit a coral nursery and actively contribute to growing and maintaining corals that will later be transplanted to revive damaged reef areas. You’ll help clean and care for the structures, monitor coral growth, and gain a unique insight into marine restoration efforts.

Pre-booking strongly advised due to limited availability. It can be booked as many times as wished.

These 2 options perfectly combine meaningful conservation work with unforgettable underwater adventure - making your time in Zanzibar both impactful and truly memorable!

Experience a thrilling dive day in Stone Town (approx. 1.5 hours drive from the camp). This adventure includes two dives - one exploring a shipwreck and another discovering a vibrant reef.

Transport to Stone Town is not included but can be shared if several participants join (cost: around 60 USD). Departure from camp at 07:00 AM, return around 15:00. Participants may optionally stay longer in Stone Town. 

If you’ve always wanted to take scuba diving lessons, experience unparalleled adventure and see the world beneath the waves, this is where it starts! Get your scuba diving certification with the PADI Open Water Diver course – the world’s most popular and widely recognized scuba course. 

Please note that this is only available for volunteer on the Coastal and Marine Conservation project.

The PADI Open Water Diver course covers three main areas: Knowledge Development, Confined Water Dives, and Open Water Dives. 

Once certified, PADI will send you your personal Open Water license card via mail. This certification card allows you to dive with every PADI dive shop around the world!

To get the certification, you need to:
 
1) Complete a medical form that IVHQ will send to you. This is to verify that you are allowed to scuba dive. If you have any medical history that may prevent you from scuba diving please check with your doctor before booking the course.
 
2) Book and pay the course at least 1 month in advance of your start date.

To get the certification, you need to complete two parts:

1) Theory - through PADI eLearning system

You can get started immediately with the classroom portion of your certification course and the local team will send you this once you have booked & paid for your course.

Please note, you must complete this portion of the course before arriving in Zanzibar.

Once on the program, we will finish off the appropriate in-water diver portion of the course, following the below schedule:

Friday : pick up at 9am - pool session (4-5 hours)

Saturday: pick up at 8am - two open water dives (Half day trip) 

Sunday : pick up at 8am - two open water dives (Half day trip)

At the end of the third day you will be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver. As a PADI Open Water Diver, you'll be trained to a maximum depth of 18 metres/60 feet, and are qualified to dive in conditions as good as, or better than, those in which you trained. It's just the beginning of a lifetime filled with dive adventures.
