Day 1 • Porto

Welcome to Portugal! Stretching along the banks of the River Douro, Porto is one of Portugal's most romantic cities. Known for majestic bridges, a medieval riverside district with its cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and cafes, Porto is also well known for one more thing; surprise surprise – Porto is the birthplace of the fortified wine, port. Today, there’s an important welcome meeting at 6 pm where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. After your meeting, why not get the crew together and head out to an optional dinner – your group leader will know of some great spots to go.

Day 2 • Porto

Take a leader-led orientation walk with your group this morning to get your bearings. One of the best ways to get to know Porto is through its port wine, so you’ll get a chance to test out Portugal’s famed wine on an included wine tasting. Otherwise, the day is free to do as you please. The city's World Heritage-listed Ribeira district is packed with twisting alleys, staircases and baroque churches, and is great to explore on foot. Perhaps check out Livraria Lello is a stunning neo-Gothic bookstore famed for its sweeping crimson staircase, ornate woodwork, and magical atmosphere that feels lifted from a storybook. For a sensational view of the whole town head to the Torre dos Clerigos (Clerigos Tower), or head down Allies Avenue to see the French-inspired buildings. Oh, and in the evening, why not book yourself on a Rio Douro cruise on one of the historic 'rabelo' boats to see the city from the water.

Day 3 • Coimbra

Take a train to Coimbra this morning and head out on an orientation walk with your group to learn about the river-side city that was once the capital of the country. Wander through the lanes and square of the Old Quarter and be sure to pass by the University of Coimbra – the oldest in Portugal. The afternoon is free for you to enjoy as you please, maybe head back to the university and visit its library – but you’ll need to pre-book in advance! Tonight, meet up with your group again for a Fado show. Coimbra’s version of Fado is linked to the academic traditions of its university and the music is characterized by sombre tunes and lyrics.

Day 4 • Nazare

Hop on a public bus and head to Nazare today, the coastal town known for its fishing culture and traditions. Head out on an orientation walk with your group and visit the fishermen’s district to see the open-air museum of historic boats – Barcos Salvas Vidas – and the open-air dried fish museum – Seca do Peixe. After, take the funicular to O Sitio to see Nazare from a different angle at the Suberco viewpoint, the upper part of the town high above the sea. You’ll also get to check out the Sanctuary of our Lady of Nazareth and the Ermida da Memoria. Tonight, watch the sunset cast glows on the white-washed town and head out for a seafood dinner.

Day 5 • Obidos / Lisbon

Head to Obidos today, a historic town north of Lisbon. Your leader will bring your group on an orientation walk to learn about this charming medieval town that feels like stepping back in time. Wander its cobblestone streets to check out its whitewashed houses, churches and monuments, and the castle perched behind the castle walls. Try out the town’s signature ginjinha – sour cherry liqueur – at a tasting with the group. Later in the afternoon, continue to Lisbon.

Day 6 • Lisbon

Explore the capital of Portugal this morning on an orientation walk with your group. Lisbon is known for its architecture, seafood and non-stop nightlife. There are some great modern and ancient art museums to check out, like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Get a real taste of local cuisine with a stop at a local shop for pasteis de nata with your group – Portuguese custard tarts. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own leisure, maybe take a day trip to Sintra – a royal sanctuary full of pastel coloured Romanticist buildings. Tonight, you could experience Portugal’s way of life by enjoying a glass of wine and some local bites while watching the sun set on the city’s terracotta rooftops with your group at one of the many scenic restaurants – your leader can point you in the right direction.

Day 7 • Lisbon

With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time!

Day 1: Lisbon. Arrive at any time. If visiting the historic district of Belém is on your bucket list, we recommend arriving early on this day to explore its major sites like the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. Most attractions in Belém are closed on Mondays.

  • Meet Your CEO and Group: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.

Day 2: Lisbon. Enjoy a CEO-led orientation walk of Lisbon. The rest of the day is free for exploration. In the evening enjoy a Fado performance and traditional Portuguese dinner in one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods.

Today's activities:
  • Lisbon Orientation Walk: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.
  • Fado Night with Traditional Portuguese Meal: Sit down to a traditional meal and lend your ears to the sound of a performance by Portuguese folk music artists.
Opt to pre-book a spot on the Eats, Street Art and Undiscovered Lisbon tour during your free time in Lisbon.


Day 3: Lisbon/Coimbra. Leave Lisbon behind and head north to the small hill town of Batalha, best known for its ornate gothic monastery built to commemorate Portugal's victory in the infamous battle of Aljubarrota. Visit the historic Monastery of Batalha with free time to wander the grounds. Continue to the medieval capital of Portugal, Coimbra.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Lisbon - Coimbra. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Monastery of Batalha Visit: Visit the Bathala Monastery built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The elaborate, Gothic-style architecture of this UNESCO site is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the region.
  • Free Time: Take time to wander around the jaw-droppingly gorgeous monastery, or get out and explore the surrounding area.

Day 4: Coimbra. Enjoy a free day to explore Coimbra. Opt to visit the famous Coimbra University, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013 (and also the inspiration for Harry Potter's Hogwarts). Explore the winding streets and the riverfront filled with restaurants and bars, or opt for a day trip to the nearby coastal town of Aveiro or the pilgrimage sites of Fátima.

  • Free Time: Get out and explore.

Day 5: Coimbra/Porto. Continue to the historic and vibrant coastal town of Porto in the morning, and take an orientation walk upon arrival.

Today's activities:
  • Local Train: Coimbra - Porto, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Climb aboard, take your seat, and get around like the locals do.
  • Orientation with CEO: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.

Day 6: Porto. Free day to explore Porto. Opt to take a cruise down the Douro River, or explore the city which gained UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1996. In the evening enjoy a visit to the port wine cellars and a tasting.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Take it all in.
  • Port Wine Cellar Visit: Finish off the day with a tour of the cellars of the region's famed export - Port wine. Learn about the art of Port making and the processes that render its rich taste. Indulge in a tasting and raise a glass to a day well spent. Saúde!

Day 7: Porto/Madrid. Catch a flight to Madrid and spend the rest of the day exploring the city at your own pace.

Today's activities:
  • Plane: Porto - Madrid, 1 hour and 15 minutes. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... yup, it is a plane, actually.
  • Free Time: Lively, passionate Madrid is a treasure trove of art and architecture, with its royal palaces and works by masters including Goya, Picasso, and Dalí. Be sure to take in some tapas. Madrid is one of the richest culinary capitals of Europe, and showcases food from all over Spain.
Kindly note there is a 20kg luggage weight restriction on this internal flight. Please make sure to plan your packing with this in mind.


Day 8: Madrid. Take a brief orientation walk with your CEO, then enjoy a full day to explore this bustling capital. Discover Plaza Mayor or opt to visit the famous Royal Palace. Indulge in delicious Spanish tapas or get your art fix at the Prado Museum.

Day 9: Madrid/Granada. Journey south to Granada. Upon arrival enjoy an orientation walk. Wander through the whitewashed historic quarter of the Albaicin; with its narrow lanes and fantastic views, it's a great place to watch the sunset.

Today's activities:

  • Local Bus: Madrid - Granada, 4 hours and 12 minutes. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Albaicín (El Albayzín) Visit: Wander through the historic quarter of the Albaicín. Try to head there for sunset. With its narrow lanes and fantastic views back to the Alhambra, visitors are rewarded with a spectacular colour-washed skyline when the sun goes down.

Day 10: Granada. Enjoy a guided visit to the architectural masterpiece, the Alhambra. In the evening, opt to go for a stroll and check out the local tapas and wine bars.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Wander this charming city and sample their famous tapas.
  • Alhambra visit: Enjoy a guided visit of the Alhambra, one of the greatest accomplishments of Islamic art and architecture. Learn about Granada's reign as one of the region's most regal cities during the Muslim rule of Spain, which is captured in time within the Alhambra.
Due to regulations for Alhambra's ticketing system, your passport information must be provided to IVHQ at the time of booking in order to guarantee your guided tour of the Alhambra. See "Important notes" under Tour Details for more information.

Day 11: Granada/Cordoba/Seville. Travel to Seville via picturesque Cordoba. Go for a stroll through the historic Jewish quarter and visit the iconic Mezquita de Cordoba (mosque). In the early evening, continue towards Seville and end your day with free time to get to know the city.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Granada - Seville. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Mezquita de Córdoba (Mosque) Visit: Be amazed by the diverse and stunning architecture of Córdoba's most famous monument, the extraordinary Mezquita. Built as a mosque in 785 by the Moors, the Mezquita was converted in the 16th century by the remarkable addition of a Christian cathedral inserted into the centre of the building.
  • Jewish Quarter (Juderia) Visit: Wander among narrow winding lanes, traditional houses, and charming cafés in Cordoba's historic medieval Jewish quarter. Discover one of Spain's three remaining synagogues.

Day 12: Seville. Spend a day enjoying this city and its Moorish influence. Opt to explore the district of Santa Cruz, the Alcázar palace or the world's largest Gothic cathedral. In the early evening, end your day with a dramatic flamenco performance.

Day 13: Seville/Barcelona. Hop on the train and get comfortable on the journey north to Barcelona. Take an orientation walk, including visits to the Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas. In the evening participate in a paella cooking class, followed by a group dinner to round out the day.

  • Train: Seville - Barcelona, 6 hours. Climb aboard, take a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Orientation Walk: Enjoy an orientation walk along Las Ramblas and stop at the famous Boqueria market.
  • Mescladis Paella Cooking Class and Dinner: Mescladis - Catalan for "Mixed Space" - is a migrant training kitchen and cafe in the heart of Barcelona featuring a unique feel that fuses old Catalan favourites and migrants' home recipes. With the help of migrant students, learn how to make paella with the resident chef, accompanied by a discussion that promotes social reflection - with the kitchen and food at the centre of it all. Then enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Day 14: Barcelona. Depart at any time.

  • Meet Your Expedition Leader and Group: Your opportunity to meet your National Geographic Expedition Leader and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
  • Fado Night with Traditional Portuguese Meal: Sit down to a traditional meal and lend your ears to the sound of a performance by Portuguese folk music artists.
To ensure you are able to join the group for dinner, please arrive in Lisbon by 6pm at the latest. Portugal features diverse terrain, including regions with steep streets and uneven surfaces. Please bring sturdy walking shoes and be prepared for a lot of walking. 


Day 2: Lisbon. Travel back in time to the fairytale castles and hills of Sintra, a 19th-century resort town and UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the colourful manors, medieval palaces, and lush gardens that enchanted English Romantic poet Lord Byron as well as Portuguese royalty. Enjoy a short orientation walk followed by a free afternoon to discover Lisbon's pastel-hued architecture and lively plazas. Opt to soar over Lisbon on the historic Santa Justa lift, an engineering marvel that ascends 147 feet to an epic viewing platform.

Day 3: Lisbon/Évora. Head to medieval Évora, in the heart of the bucolic Alentejo region, for a fascinating foray into the past. Be mesmerized by the haunting Chapel of Bones, erected by 16th-century Franciscan monks. Then pay a visit to one of the best preserved Roman temples on the Iberian Peninsula, known as Diana's Temple.

  • Private Vehicle: Lisbon - Évora, 2 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Chapel of Bones Visit: Visit the most famous sight in Évora, the Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones. Take care if squeamish - built in the 1500s by a Franciscan monk, the walls are covered with human skeletons as a reminder to fellow monks that life is fleeting.
  • Diana Roman Temple: Take a visit to the best preserved Roman structure on the Iberian Peninsula, assumed to have been constructed in 1 AD.

Day 4: Évora. Venture into the Alentejo countryside, home to centuries-old cork forests. Join a local expert at a traditional farm, and learn about cork harvesting and production. Then sit down to a traditional cork stripper's lunch at the cork farm. This afternoon, return to Évora and explore its UNESCO World Heritage-designated city centre on your own, walking past whitewashed houses decorated with azulejos and wrought-iron balconies.

  • Cork Farm Visit and Lunch: Since this is the region where most of Portugal's cork is grown you'll learn about cork harvesting and production from a local expert at a traditional cork farm in the Alentejo countryside, home to centuries-old cork forests and about 30 minutes from Évora. After the guided walk of the farm sit down for a traditional cork stripper's lunch at a local restaurant in town.

Day 5: Évora/Coimbra. Spend the day in Tomar and delve into the Crusades era in Portugal. Go on a guided walk with a local expert around the vast medieval complex of the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Templar Castle, founded in 1160 by Gualdim Pais-grand master of the Knights Templar. Continue on to Coimbra for the evening.

Day 6: Coimbra/Porto. This morning, enjoy a tour around the centuries-old University of Coimbra, Portugal's most prestigious university and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enter through the 10th-century Porta Férra, the old entrance to the citadel of Coimbra. Following mosaic cobblestone paths around campus, stopping to see the baroque stylings of the Joanina Library, elaborate azulejo wall tiles adorning the Chapel of São Miguel, and the 18th-century Botanical Garden. Later, catch the train to Porto on the coast.

Float on the typical Rabelo Boat along the riverbanks of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia and marvel at the historical bridges connecting the two cities. In your free time, explore the cobblestone streets of Porto's medieval Ribeira district, marvel at the baroque São Francisco Church, and admire the palatial Palácio de Bolsa, a one time stock market.

You might have heard of the “Seven Wonders of the World”, but did you know this phrase also applies to food? Try three of the seven wonders of Portuguese cuisine on our Lisbon Food Tour, an award-winning experience through the neoclassical Baixa neighbourhood. With everything pre-arranged, you’ll skip the crowds; no queues, no guesswork, just authentic Portuguese flavours, served stress-free.

A local guide will take you and a group of fellow foodies on a comprehensive gastronomic tour of the only flat neighbourhood in the city, featuring the best of "new Lisbon" after the devastating earthquake of 1755.

Our route starts from the river Tagus and takes us through magnificent squares like Praca do Comercio, making our way toward the heart of Baixa. This is where we'll discover the history of the Portuguese Empire and Inquisition, and see sought-after sites like Igreja do Santo Domingo and the Elevador de Santa Justa.

Along the way, we'll stop at local, family-owned eateries to try traditional petiscos and drinks. Tantalise your taste buds with Portuguese classics like codfish, chouriço, and seafood rice, before indulging in the city's street food featuring bifana, a sandwich stuffed with simmering meat, and a salgado, battered and fried. Then, wash it all down with perfectly paired drinks like green wine, local beer, and Ginjinha, a traditional cherry liqueur.

And of course, no Lisbon Food and Wine Tour would be complete without a sweet treat. To end your tour, you’ll satisfy your sweet tooth with a classic Portuguese dessert before continuing the night with your newfound friends.

Day 1 • Porto

Welcome to Portugal! Stretching along the banks of the River Douro, Porto is one of Portugal's most romantic cities. Known for majestic bridges, a medieval riverside district with its cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and cafes, Porto is also well known for one more thing; surprise surprise – Porto is the birthplace of the fortified wine, port. Today, there’s an important welcome meeting at 6 pm where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. After your meeting, why not get the crew together and head out to an optional dinner – your group leader will know of some great spots to go.

Day 2 • Porto

Take a leader-led orientation walk with your group this morning to get your bearings. One of the best ways to get to know Porto is through its port wine, so you’ll get a chance to test out Portugal’s famed wine on an included wine tasting. Otherwise, the day is free to do as you please. The city's World Heritage-listed Ribeira district is packed with twisting alleys, staircases and baroque churches, and is great to explore on foot. Perhaps check out Livraria Lello is a stunning neo-Gothic bookstore famed for its sweeping crimson staircase, ornate woodwork, and magical atmosphere that feels lifted from a storybook. For a sensational view of the whole town head to the Torre dos Clerigos (Clerigos Tower), or head down Allies Avenue to see the French-inspired buildings. Oh, and in the evening, why not book yourself on a Rio Douro cruise on one of the historic 'rabelo' boats to see the city from the water.

Day 3 • Coimbra

Take a train to Coimbra this morning and head out on an orientation walk with your group to learn about the river-side city that was once the capital of the country. Wander through the lanes and square of the Old Quarter and be sure to pass by the University of Coimbra – the oldest in Portugal. The afternoon is free for you to enjoy as you please, maybe head back to the university and visit its library – but you’ll need to pre-book in advance! Tonight, meet up with your group again for a Fado show. Coimbra’s version of Fado is linked to the academic traditions of its university and the music is characterized by sombre tunes and lyrics.

Day 4 • Nazare

Hop on a public bus and head to Nazare today, the coastal town known for its fishing culture and traditions. Head out on an orientation walk with your group and visit the fishermen’s district to see the open-air museum of historic boats – Barcos Salvas Vidas – and the open-air dried fish museum – Seca do Peixe. After, take the funicular to O Sitio to see Nazare from a different angle at the Suberco viewpoint, the upper part of the town high above the sea. You’ll also get to check out the Sanctuary of our Lady of Nazareth and the Ermida da Memoria. Tonight, watch the sunset cast glows on the white-washed town and head out for a seafood dinner.

Day 5 • Obidos / Lisbon

Head to Obidos today, a historic town north of Lisbon. Your leader will bring your group on an orientation walk to learn about this charming medieval town that feels like stepping back in time. Wander its cobblestone streets to check out its whitewashed houses, churches and monuments, and the castle perched behind the castle walls. Try out the town’s signature ginjinha – sour cherry liqueur – at a tasting with the group. Later in the afternoon, continue to Lisbon.

Day 6 • Lisbon

Explore the capital of Portugal this morning on an orientation walk with your group. Lisbon is known for its architecture, seafood and non-stop nightlife. There are some great modern and ancient art museums to check out, like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Get a real taste of local cuisine with a stop at a local shop for pasteis de nata with your group – Portuguese custard tarts. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own leisure, maybe take a day trip to Sintra – a royal sanctuary full of pastel coloured Romanticist buildings. Tonight, you could experience Portugal’s way of life by enjoying a glass of wine and some local bites while watching the sun set on the city’s terracotta rooftops with your group at one of the many scenic restaurants – your leader can point you in the right direction.

Day 7 • Lisbon

With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time!

Looking to enhance your Portuguese language skills while volunteering in Portugal? There’s no better time or more affordable way to gain confidence speaking, reading and writing in Portuguese! 

These lessons are highly recommended to help settle any language barriers or culture shock you could face while in Portugal. The lesson content is created and delivered by a professional language teacher, who has extensive experience teaching in the classroom. The lessons provide you with valuable vocabulary and tools needed to help you prepare for your volunteer project.

Past volunteers have relayed that taking these lessons help immensely with day-to-day volunteer work and communicating with local people. The language lessons are tailored to each volunteer’s current level of Portuguese and classes run from Monday through to Friday. The cost is very affordable and offered exclusively to IVHQ volunteers.

Please note that Portuguese lessons are held at the Lisbon accommodation and are not available to volunteers on the Biological Park Conservation project or Wolf Conservation project.

Please also note when adding the language lessons to your file you will need to select the number of hours you wish to complete as per below:

Day 1 • Porto

Welcome to Portugal! Stretching along the banks of the River Douro, Porto is one of Portugal's most romantic cities. Known for majestic bridges, a medieval riverside district with its cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and cafes, Porto is also well known for one more thing; surprise surprise – Porto is the birthplace of the fortified wine, port. Today, there’s an important welcome meeting at 6 pm where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. After your meeting, why not get the crew together and head out to an optional dinner – your group leader will know of some great spots to go.

Day 2 • Porto

Take a leader-led orientation walk with your group this morning to get your bearings. One of the best ways to get to know Porto is through its port wine, so you’ll get a chance to test out Portugal’s famed wine on an included wine tasting. Otherwise, the day is free to do as you please. The city's World Heritage-listed Ribeira district is packed with twisting alleys, staircases and baroque churches, and is great to explore on foot. Perhaps check out Livraria Lello is a stunning neo-Gothic bookstore famed for its sweeping crimson staircase, ornate woodwork, and magical atmosphere that feels lifted from a storybook. For a sensational view of the whole town head to the Torre dos Clerigos (Clerigos Tower), or head down Allies Avenue to see the French-inspired buildings. Oh, and in the evening, why not book yourself on a Rio Douro cruise on one of the historic 'rabelo' boats to see the city from the water.

Day 3 • Coimbra

Take a train to Coimbra this morning and head out on an orientation walk with your group to learn about the river-side city that was once the capital of the country. Wander through the lanes and square of the Old Quarter and be sure to pass by the University of Coimbra – the oldest in Portugal. The afternoon is free for you to enjoy as you please, maybe head back to the university and visit its library – but you’ll need to pre-book in advance! Tonight, meet up with your group again for a Fado show. Coimbra’s version of Fado is linked to the academic traditions of its university and the music is characterized by sombre tunes and lyrics.

Day 4 • Nazare

Hop on a public bus and head to Nazare today, the coastal town known for its fishing culture and traditions. Head out on an orientation walk with your group and visit the fishermen’s district to see the open-air museum of historic boats – Barcos Salvas Vidas – and the open-air dried fish museum – Seca do Peixe. After, take the funicular to O Sitio to see Nazare from a different angle at the Suberco viewpoint, the upper part of the town high above the sea. You’ll also get to check out the Sanctuary of our Lady of Nazareth and the Ermida da Memoria. Tonight, watch the sunset cast glows on the white-washed town and head out for a seafood dinner.

Day 5 • Obidos / Lisbon

Head to Obidos today, a historic town north of Lisbon. Your leader will bring your group on an orientation walk to learn about this charming medieval town that feels like stepping back in time. Wander its cobblestone streets to check out its whitewashed houses, churches and monuments, and the castle perched behind the castle walls. Try out the town’s signature ginjinha – sour cherry liqueur – at a tasting with the group. Later in the afternoon, continue to Lisbon.

Day 6 • Lisbon

Explore the capital of Portugal this morning on an orientation walk with your group. Lisbon is known for its architecture, seafood and non-stop nightlife. There are some great modern and ancient art museums to check out, like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Get a real taste of local cuisine with a stop at a local shop for pasteis de nata with your group – Portuguese custard tarts. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own leisure, maybe take a day trip to Sintra – a royal sanctuary full of pastel coloured Romanticist buildings. Tonight, you could experience Portugal’s way of life by enjoying a glass of wine and some local bites while watching the sun set on the city’s terracotta rooftops with your group at one of the many scenic restaurants – your leader can point you in the right direction.

Day 7 • Lisbon

With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time!

Day 1: Lisbon. Arrive at any time. If visiting the historic district of Belém is on your bucket list, we recommend arriving early on this day to explore its major sites like the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. Most attractions in Belém are closed on Mondays.

  • Meet Your CEO and Group: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.

Day 2: Lisbon. Enjoy a CEO-led orientation walk of Lisbon. The rest of the day is free for exploration. In the evening enjoy a Fado performance and traditional Portuguese dinner in one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods.

Today's activities:
  • Lisbon Orientation Walk: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.
  • Fado Night with Traditional Portuguese Meal: Sit down to a traditional meal and lend your ears to the sound of a performance by Portuguese folk music artists.
Opt to pre-book a spot on the Eats, Street Art and Undiscovered Lisbon tour during your free time in Lisbon.


Day 3: Lisbon/Coimbra. Leave Lisbon behind and head north to the small hill town of Batalha, best known for its ornate gothic monastery built to commemorate Portugal's victory in the infamous battle of Aljubarrota. Visit the historic Monastery of Batalha with free time to wander the grounds. Continue to the medieval capital of Portugal, Coimbra.

  • Private Vehicle: Lisbon - Coimbra. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Monastery of Batalha Visit: Visit the Bathala Monastery built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The elaborate, Gothic-style architecture of this UNESCO site is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the region.
  • Free Time: Take time to wander around the jaw-droppingly gorgeous monastery, or get out and explore the surrounding area.

Day 4: Coimbra. Enjoy a free day to explore Coimbra. Opt to visit the famous Coimbra University, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013 (and also the inspiration for Harry Potter's Hogwarts). Explore the winding streets and the riverfront filled with restaurants and bars, or opt for a day trip to the nearby coastal town of Aveiro or the pilgrimage sites of Fátima.

Day 5: Coimbra/Porto. Continue to the historic and vibrant coastal town of Porto in the morning, and take an orientation walk upon arrival.

  • Local Train: Coimbra - Porto, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Climb aboard, take your seat, and get around like the locals do.

Day 6: Porto. Free day to explore Porto. Opt to take a cruise down the Douro River, or explore the city which gained UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1996. In the evening enjoy a visit to the port wine cellars and a tasting.

  • Free Time: Take it all in.
  • Port Wine Cellar Visit: Finish off the day with a tour of the cellars of the region's famed export - Port wine. Learn about the art of Port making and the processes that render its rich taste. Indulge in a tasting and raise a glass to a day well spent. Saúde!

Day 7: Porto/Madrid. Catch a flight to Madrid and spend the rest of the day exploring the city at your own pace.

  • Plane: Porto - Madrid, 1 hour and 15 minutes. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... yup, it is a plane, actually.
  • Free Time: Lively, passionate Madrid is a treasure trove of art and architecture, with its royal palaces and works by masters including Goya, Picasso, and Dalí. Be sure to take in some tapas. Madrid is one of the richest culinary capitals of Europe, and showcases food from all over Spain.
Kindly note there is a 20kg luggage weight restriction on this internal flight. Please make sure to plan your packing with this in mind.


Day 8: Madrid. Take a brief orientation walk with your CEO, then enjoy a full day to explore this bustling capital. Discover Plaza Mayor or opt to visit the famous Royal Palace. Indulge in delicious Spanish tapas or get your art fix at the Prado Museum.

  • Local Bus: Madrid - Granada, 4 hours and 12 minutes. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Albaicín (El Albayzín) Visit: Wander through the historic quarter of the Albaicín. Try to head there for sunset. With its narrow lanes and fantastic views back to the Alhambra, visitors are rewarded with a spectacular colour-washed skyline when the sun goes down.

Day 10: Granada. Enjoy a guided visit to the architectural masterpiece, the Alhambra. In the evening, opt to go for a stroll and check out the local tapas and wine bars.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Wander this charming city and sample their famous tapas.
  • Alhambra visit: Enjoy a guided visit of the Alhambra, one of the greatest accomplishments of Islamic art and architecture. Learn about Granada's reign as one of the region's most regal cities during the Muslim rule of Spain, which is captured in time within the Alhambra.

Day 11: Granada/Cordoba/Seville. Travel to Seville via picturesque Cordoba. Go for a stroll through the historic Jewish quarter and visit the iconic Mezquita de Cordoba (mosque). In the early evening, continue towards Seville and end your day with free time to get to know the city.

  • Private Vehicle: Granada - Seville. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Mezquita de Córdoba (Mosque) Visit: Be amazed by the diverse and stunning architecture of Córdoba's most famous monument, the extraordinary Mezquita. Built as a mosque in 785 by the Moors, the Mezquita was converted in the 16th century by the remarkable addition of a Christian cathedral inserted into the centre of the building.
  • Jewish Quarter (Juderia) Visit: Wander among narrow winding lanes, traditional houses, and charming cafés in Cordoba's historic medieval Jewish quarter. Discover one of Spain's three remaining synagogues.

Day 12: Seville. Spend a day enjoying this city and its Moorish influence. Opt to explore the district of Santa Cruz, the Alcázar palace or the world's largest Gothic cathedral. In the early evening, end your day with a dramatic flamenco performance.

  • Mescladis Paella Cooking Class and Dinner: Mescladis - Catalan for "Mixed Space" - is a migrant training kitchen and cafe in the heart of Barcelona featuring a unique feel that fuses old Catalan favourites and migrants' home recipes. With the help of migrant students, learn how to make paella with the resident chef, accompanied by a discussion that promotes social reflection - with the kitchen and food at the centre of it all. Then enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Day 14: Barcelona. Depart at any time.

Day 7: Évora/Seville. Journey to the Algarve coast to the small fishing village of Olhão. Explore its bustling fish market, active waterfront and white washed laneways. Continue to Seville and enjoy an orientation walk on arrival.

  • Private Vehicle: Olhão - Seville, 2 hours and 15 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Orientation With CEO: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.

Day 8: Seville. Spend a day enjoying this city and its Moorish influence. Opt to explore the district of Santa Cruz and the Alcazar Palace before joining the group in the evening for a dramatic flamenco performance.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Spend time in Seville exploring Moorish monuments, parks, and gardens, getting a feel for Seville's energetic pulse. Opt to savour some tapas at the city's many bars and cafés.
  • Flamenco Show: Enjoy a flamenco performance in the city known for the energetic dance. Be swept away by the flamenco's passion, fire, and grit!
Please note that if you wish to visit popular sites and want to avoid waiting in line, it is advisable to reserve tickets in advance. We recommend pre-arranging your visit to the Alcázar of Seville.

  • Meet Your Expedition Leader and Group: Your opportunity to meet your National Geographic Expedition Leader and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
  • Fado Night with Traditional Portuguese Meal: Sit down to a traditional meal and lend your ears to the sound of a performance by Portuguese folk music artists.
To ensure you are able to join the group for dinner, please arrive in Lisbon by 6pm at the latest. Portugal features diverse terrain, including regions with steep streets and uneven surfaces. Please bring sturdy walking shoes and be prepared for a lot of walking. 


Day 2: Lisbon. Travel back in time to the fairytale castles and hills of Sintra, a 19th-century resort town and UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the colourful manors, medieval palaces, and lush gardens that enchanted English Romantic poet Lord Byron as well as Portuguese royalty. Enjoy a short orientation walk followed by a free afternoon to discover Lisbon's pastel-hued architecture and lively plazas. Opt to soar over Lisbon on the historic Santa Justa lift, an engineering marvel that ascends 147 feet to an epic viewing platform.

This afternoon, return to Évora and explore its UNESCO World Heritage-designated city centre on your own, walking past whitewashed houses decorated with azulejos and wrought-iron balconies.

  • Cork Farm Visit and Lunch: Since this is the region where most of Portugal's cork is grown you'll learn about cork harvesting and production from a local expert at a traditional cork farm in the Alentejo countryside, home to centuries-old cork forests and about 30 minutes from Évora. After the guided walk of the farm sit down for a traditional cork stripper's lunch at a local restaurant in town.

Day 5: Évora/Coimbra. Spend the day in Tomar and delve into the Crusades era in Portugal. Go on a guided walk with a local expert around the vast medieval complex of the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Templar Castle, founded in 1160 by Gualdim Pais-grand master of the Knights Templar. Continue on to Coimbra for the evening.

Day 6: Coimbra/Porto. This morning, enjoy a tour around the centuries-old University of Coimbra, Portugal's most prestigious university and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enter through the 10th-century Porta Férra, the old entrance to the citadel of Coimbra. Following mosaic cobblestone paths around campus, stopping to see the baroque stylings of the Joanina Library, elaborate azulejo wall tiles adorning the Chapel of São Miguel, and the 18th-century Botanical Garden. Later, catch the train to Porto on the coast.

  • University of Coimbra Visit: Portugal's most prestigious university, the University of Coimbra is a must see landmark. Explore the World Heritage Site as you enter through the Porta Férra, the old entrance to the citadel of Coimbra constructed in the 10th century. Walk through the campus along mosaic cobblestone paths, explore it's botanical gardens and Chapel of S. Miguel and opt to visit the ornate Joanina Library.
  • Local Train: Coimbra - Porto, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Climb aboard, take your seat, and get around like the locals do.

Day 7: Porto. Board a boat down Portugal's Douro River, or "river of gold". Float on the typical Rabelo Boat along the riverbanks of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia and marvel at the historical bridges connecting the two cities. Famous for centuries as a port wine shipper's centre, discover the rich tradition of port making at a local wine cellar, then cap off the day with a tasting of this distinct regional specialty. In your free time, explore the cobblestone streets of Porto's medieval Ribeira district, marvel at the baroque São Francisco Church, and admire the palatial Palácio de Bolsa, a one time stock market.

You might have heard of the “Seven Wonders of the World”, but did you know this phrase also applies to food? Try three of the seven wonders of Portuguese cuisine on our Lisbon Food Tour, an award-winning experience through the neoclassical Baixa neighbourhood. With everything pre-arranged, you’ll skip the crowds; no queues, no guesswork, just authentic Portuguese flavours, served stress-free.

A local guide will take you and a group of fellow foodies on a comprehensive gastronomic tour of the only flat neighbourhood in the city, featuring the best of "new Lisbon" after the devastating earthquake of 1755.

Our route starts from the river Tagus and takes us through magnificent squares like Praca do Comercio, making our way toward the heart of Baixa. This is where we'll discover the history of the Portuguese Empire and Inquisition, and see sought-after sites like Igreja do Santo Domingo and the Elevador de Santa Justa.

Along the way, we'll stop at local, family-owned eateries to try traditional petiscos and drinks. Tantalise your taste buds with Portuguese classics like codfish, chouriço, and seafood rice, before indulging in the city's street food featuring bifana, a sandwich stuffed with simmering meat, and a salgado, battered and fried. Then, wash it all down with perfectly paired drinks like green wine, local beer, and Ginjinha, a traditional cherry liqueur.

And of course, no Lisbon Food and Wine Tour would be complete without a sweet treat. To end your tour, you’ll satisfy your sweet tooth with a classic Portuguese dessert before continuing the night with your newfound friends.

This tour takes 2.5 hours and can be booked for any day of the week (except your Monday start date) beginning at 11:30AM, 5:00PM or 6:00PM.

Looking to enhance your Portuguese language skills while volunteering in Portugal? There’s no better time or more affordable way to gain confidence speaking, reading and writing in Portuguese! 

These lessons are highly recommended to help settle any language barriers or culture shock you could face while in Portugal. The lesson content is created and delivered by a professional language teacher, who has extensive experience teaching in the classroom. The lessons provide you with valuable vocabulary and tools needed to help you prepare for your volunteer project.

Past volunteers have relayed that taking these lessons help immensely with day-to-day volunteer work and communicating with local people. The language lessons are tailored to each volunteer’s current level of Portuguese and classes run from Monday through to Friday. The cost is very affordable and offered exclusively to IVHQ volunteers.

Please note that Portuguese lessons are held at the Lisbon accommodation and are not available to volunteers on the Biological Park Conservation project or Wolf Conservation project.

7 Day - Highlights of Portugal!
Day 1 • Porto

Welcome to Portugal! Stretching along the banks of the River Douro, Porto is one of Portugal's most romantic cities. Known for majestic bridges, a medieval riverside district with its cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and cafes, Porto is also well known for one more thing; surprise surprise – Porto is the birthplace of the fortified wine, port. Today, there’s an important welcome meeting at 6 pm where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. After your meeting, why not get the crew together and head out to an optional dinner – your group leader will know of some great spots to go.

Day 2 • Porto

Take a leader-led orientation walk with your group this morning to get your bearings. One of the best ways to get to know Porto is through its port wine, so you’ll get a chance to test out Portugal’s famed wine on an included wine tasting. Otherwise, the day is free to do as you please. The city's World Heritage-listed Ribeira district is packed with twisting alleys, staircases and baroque churches, and is great to explore on foot. Perhaps check out Livraria Lello is a stunning neo-Gothic bookstore famed for its sweeping crimson staircase, ornate woodwork, and magical atmosphere that feels lifted from a storybook. For a sensational view of the whole town head to the Torre dos Clerigos (Clerigos Tower), or head down Allies Avenue to see the French-inspired buildings. Oh, and in the evening, why not book yourself on a Rio Douro cruise on one of the historic 'rabelo' boats to see the city from the water.

Day 3 • Coimbra

Take a train to Coimbra this morning and head out on an orientation walk with your group to learn about the river-side city that was once the capital of the country. Wander through the lanes and square of the Old Quarter and be sure to pass by the University of Coimbra – the oldest in Portugal. The afternoon is free for you to enjoy as you please, maybe head back to the university and visit its library – but you’ll need to pre-book in advance! Tonight, meet up with your group again for a Fado show. Coimbra’s version of Fado is linked to the academic traditions of its university and the music is characterized by sombre tunes and lyrics.

Day 4 • Nazare

Hop on a public bus and head to Nazare today, the coastal town known for its fishing culture and traditions. Head out on an orientation walk with your group and visit the fishermen’s district to see the open-air museum of historic boats – Barcos Salvas Vidas – and the open-air dried fish museum – Seca do Peixe. After, take the funicular to O Sitio to see Nazare from a different angle at the Suberco viewpoint, the upper part of the town high above the sea. You’ll also get to check out the Sanctuary of our Lady of Nazareth and the Ermida da Memoria. Tonight, watch the sunset cast glows on the white-washed town and head out for a seafood dinner.

Day 5 • Obidos / Lisbon

Head to Obidos today, a historic town north of Lisbon. Your leader will bring your group on an orientation walk to learn about this charming medieval town that feels like stepping back in time. Wander its cobblestone streets to check out its whitewashed houses, churches and monuments, and the castle perched behind the castle walls. Try out the town’s signature ginjinha – sour cherry liqueur – at a tasting with the group. Later in the afternoon, continue to Lisbon.

Day 6 • Lisbon

Explore the capital of Portugal this morning on an orientation walk with your group. Lisbon is known for its architecture, seafood and non-stop nightlife. There are some great modern and ancient art museums to check out, like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Get a real taste of local cuisine with a stop at a local shop for pasteis de nata with your group – Portuguese custard tarts. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own leisure, maybe take a day trip to Sintra – a royal sanctuary full of pastel coloured Romanticist buildings. Tonight, you could experience Portugal’s way of life by enjoying a glass of wine and some local bites while watching the sun set on the city’s terracotta rooftops with your group at one of the many scenic restaurants – your leader can point you in the right direction.

Day 7 • Lisbon

With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time!

Want your airport drop off organized for you at the end of your IVHQ Porto trip? We can book an airport transfer for you from your volunteer accommodation back to Porto Airport (OPO) at an affordable price. 

Without knowing what the right price is to pay in Porto for an airport transfer, you can easily get overcharged, or spend a long time trying to find a decent price and reliable transport. 

You’ll be picked up from your volunteer accommodation in Porto at your chosen time, and driven directly to Porto Airport (OPO) with plenty of time for your flight. Transfers to other destinations can also be arranged if you are heading somewhere else.
