← Back to Welbie's Diary

First day at my assignment. Working with special needs children here in Xian. They require a lot of love and care. I believe it is so true that a man never stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child. It takes a special person to spend a day with these kids. It is exhasting but very rewarding. The day starts with breakfast at 7am and then we catch a bus to the project. Work with the children doing various attivities all morning until 12 noon then get something to eat. Eating is such an adventure, so many choices, but has been quite good so far. The street food is the best. After lunch back to the orphanage until 5pm then take the bus back to the volunteer house. When everyone is back from their work assignment we have supper at 7pm. Last night we all decided to go downtown to see a light show. The bus trip is an adventure all on its own. Exchanged money today at an ATM without any problems. Everything is very cheap. Lunch was about one US dollar and very good. Even only knowing the basic expressions in Chinese it is easy to get around here. When buying something I usually just point and hold up some fingers and they will tell you how much something costs. Today is the second day and we will be getting a new group of children. Can't wait to see what today has in store for us. There are three volunteers in my group at our project. One volunteer is from England, one from Canada and myself from the USA. Until my next entry. Off to work I go.
