Volunteer Winners: July 2012

After a jam-packed July with over one thousand volunteers starting projects with us, we have been flooded with a number of fantastic entries for the IVHQ Photo and Video Competitions.

Ria Hopkins shared this photo 'Gioto Girl' from the Gioto Garbage Slum in Kenya. Ria visited and assisted at the slum through the Outreach Weekend, organised by our local staff in Kenya. Ria spent twelve weeks volunteering in Kenya on our Women's Empowerment project and has earned the most votes in the IVHQ Photo Competition for July, winning her the monthly prize of US$100!

This video from Curtis Collins capturing the names, ambitions and the odd animal noise from his students in Kenya is the winning entry for last month's IVHQ Video Competition. Congratulations, Curtis!

Thanks to all those volunteers who shared feedback with us after completing their programs this month. This feedback is essential in ensuring we continue to provide the highest quality programs possible for our future volunteers. We are happy to announce this month's Feedback Draw winner is Louise Clohesy who spent 3 weeks volunteering in Cambodia on our Teaching project.

"I definitely found the experience worthwhile, I learnt a lot about working under pressure and without resources, and the children constantly kept me relaxed and smiling. I think that in the 3 weeks I managed to enhance to some degree the English level of the children, and definitely motivated them to keep learning! I felt very appreciated by the children themselves as they didn't want me to leave!

I stayed in a host family and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The house was clean and the food was excellent.

In the last week I was quite tired and the children I taught always managed to make me forget this with their positive attitude and eagerness to learn. I enjoyed the location of my placement - countryside Cambodia, meaning I got a scenic bike ride along the river to work."
