IVHQ Video Tour: Brazil

Rounding up the IVHQ Video Tour around Latin America, the video crew take a trip to our Brazil program:

Last but most certainly not least is Brazil! The vibrant city of Rio de Janerio is our final destination on the South and Central America IVHQ filming tour. Here, the volunteers live together in the charming suburb of Santa Teresa, a bohemian neighborhood full of cafes, restaurants and beautiful architecture.

Tuesday 11 December

On our first morning in Rio, we visit Hospital Nossa Sra do Loreto. Here, Associação Saúde Criança (ASC), a non-profit organisation, works with families and children in need of medical care. Today, we meet an IVHQ volunteer from France who has been working at the hospital for several months. This morning, she is helping paint benches that will be used in the new family waiting area of the clinic.

We then head to Centro de Convivência Infantil (CCI) a community centre located in the Vila Kennedy neighborhood. CCI offers cultural, social and environmental workshops, which includes sports, dance and language classes. Today, we observe two IVHQ volunteers taking an English class with young children.

Our last stop today is the Cultural and Social Center Tatiane Lima (CSC), a non-profit organization that offers activities to underprivileged communities in the Realengo neighborhood. Here, volunteers are again involved with teaching English to the children. We spend our evening with the volunteers down at Ipanema beach, enjoying happy hour caipirinhas whilst watching the sunset over Rio.

Wednesday 12 December

This morning we head to the Barreira do Vasco neighbourhood, where a group of volunteers visit to play soccer with local children. Barreira do Vasco is a very low-income community and in areas such as this, sport has become extremely important, providing much needed entertainment for children and adolescents.

Also located in Barrerira do Vasco is Retalhos Cariocas, a fashion house that started right here in the favela in 2006. Retalhos Cariocas design footwear, swimwear and clothing, as well as running training courses in sewing and crafts for local women. Volunteers placed here can be involved in all steps of the creation process.

Next, we visit a very poor part of the favela, Uga Uga, where IVHQ volunteers are involved in a construction project. Here, they are helping locals build a new house for a large family currently living in severe poverty. Today, the process begins with removal of all the furniture followed by a complete demolition of the old house.

In the afternoon, we head out to the Nova Chance Institute in the Manguiera neighborhood, part of the larger community of Sao Cristovao. This community centre offers English classes along with music and sports, such as soccer and basketball to local children. They also offer additional services, such as computer classes, medical care, physiotherapy and NGO development.

Tonight, we head out for dinner and drinks in Lapa, an area famous for samba clubs. Many of the IVHQ volunteers are working in Rio for the next few months and intend to stay on for the highlight of the Brazilian Calendar, Carnaval!!
