Calling In On Cambodia

After a few weeks visiting our programs in South East Asia Ellen Varoy is back on deck here at IVHQ and you can read about her experience calling in on our Cambodia program here:

"Some say the Khmer people are among the world’s friendliest folk and after only one week in Cambodia, I couldn’t agree more. From the moment I was greeted at the airport by our local staff, to our final meeting together, I could not have felt more welcome. And after chatting with our volunteers in country, it was clear they felt the same.

I checked in to the volunteer house in Phnom Penh on Sunday 24 June, right in the midst of volunteers arriving back from their weekend trips away - exploring ancient temples in Siem Reap, soaking up the beach culture of Sihanoukville and trekking through jungle by elephant back in Mondulkiri Province.

The volunteer house rooftop made for a fairly awesome spot for my initial meeting with the Cambodia team and doubled as a popular evening hub for volunteers to watch movies and celebrate in-house birthdays.

In between a full schedule of meetings, reporting and visiting volunteers at their projects in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, I had a chance to visit the bustline Russian Market, the impressive temple of Angkor Wat and the eerie Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - a dark reminder of the torture and suffering of victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.

It was fantastic visiting projects and talking to placements directors, who were truly grateful for the contribution our volunteers were making to their organisations – whether it was through assisting at an orphanage or childcare centre, teaching English at a local school, or helping with translations and writing proposals for Human Rights NGOs.

Akun (thank you) to our Cambodia staff for organising such a comprehensive schedule for my visit, giving me the opportunity to see a range of placements in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and prepare a detailed report for the overall program. And a BIG thank you to the IVHQ volunteers for sharing their experiences and feedback from the program with me. The volunteer feedback gathered from these visits is invaluable for IVHQ staff in forming the recommendations we pass on to our local teams and we are very grateful for the feedback shared with us.

Cambodia has become one of IVHQ's most popular volunteer destinations, hosting many happy volunteers who return home full of praise for the program. I loved visting the program and look forward to hearing stories from our future Cambodia volunteers."
