Bringing A Chance For Education To Tanzania

Although a year has passed since Katie Henoch and Lia Heaney volunteered together in Tanzania, the best friends are continuing to make an impact - providing disadvantaged Tanzanian children with opportunities for success through school sponsorship. Read Katie and Lia’s story here:

"My name is Katie Henoch and my best friend Lia Heaney and I volunteered in Tanzania with IVHQ last summer. We had an incredible experience in Tanzania and our month in Arusha truly changed our lives. We were placed in a tiny, hole-in-the-wall nursery school/day care called TUPO where twenty HIV affected 3-7 year old children attended for half a day. Before we left Arusha, we set up seven of the oldest children we worked with at our placement to start at a private English medium primary school in the new year. Once we got back to the U.S in August, we created a website, hired a lawyer who is working for us pro-bono, and became a registered 501c3 non-profit organization called Chance For Education. In November 2011, we announced the creation of our organization, launched our website, and raised more than our initial goal, which enabled us to send two more students from TUPO to start at Uhuru Peak School in January 2012. Our long term goal is to fund the education of these nine students and potentially include more for the remainder of their education, through secondary school.

We are incredibly grateful to IVHQ and without your organization's commitment to affordable, sustainable, safe, and productive volunteer work, Lia and I would not have been able to volunteer in Tanzania, and these nine students would not be going to Uhuru Peak School right now.
