A Boost for New Beginnings

We're happy to share that our first Booster Grant of 2014 has been granted to New Beginnings - Maisha Iko Sawa, a Special Needs placement that enables developmentally disabled adults of the Kibera slum to enter the workforce. The school was established by a team of IVHQ volunteers in 2012 and continues to be served by IVHQers in Kenya!

A total of US$775 was granted to invest in a number of items for New Beginnings, including a wheel chair, a walking frame, exercise mats, gym weights, beads and mat-making materials.

The investment in beads and mat-making materials will allow the students of New Beginnings to develop the skills to make jewelry, door mats and table mats, faciliating them in becoming independent and productive members of society. These items will then be sold and half of the money will go back into the purchase of more beads and mat-making materials to ensure sustainability. The students will also be able to benefit in monetary terms from the sale of these crafts, as they will be given half of the money earned from the sales made.
