Vote for the IVHQ Alternative Break Scholarship!

Applications for the Alternative Break Scholarship have closed. A group of finalists are now being shortlisted and voting will be open to the public to select the scholarship recipient at 7pm on February 17th 2019(PST)

Take a break that counts! International Volunteer HQ’s Alternative Break Scholarship is open to anyone looking to break away from the standard-issue Spring, Summer or Winter Break and join forces with other travelers who are passionate about creating positive change through meaningful international experiences.

If you're wanting to take an alternative break, but you're not sure if you can afford it. Or, you're hoping to secure an internship but you need to earn money instead. Then the Alternative Break Scholarship offers you the chance to have a meaningful experience abroad, without having to pay for it! You’ll have your Registration and Program Fees paid for plus flights up to the value of $1000, which could save you more than $3,000!

With the Alternative Break Scholarship you can choose from two alternative break options: volunteering abroad or taking an internship. Both allow you to make your vacation an extension of your education, help you develop your cross-cultural understanding and give you invaluable life experience. Learn about the difference between taking a volunteer trip or an internship.

By volunteering abroad, you’ll be taking a break that genuinely has an impact and supports the long term needs of a community abroad. Or, you can focus on career readiness by taking a global internship with our sister company, Intern Abroad HQ.

What does the Alternative Break Scholarship recipient receive?

  • 2-week volunteer or intern abroad program with International Volunteer HQ or Intern Abroad HQ in the destination of the recipients choice
  • Flight voucher (to the value of US$1000) from IVHQ Flights
  • Travel insurance up to the value of US$250 for the 2-week duration of the IVHQ Program
  • The 'Certificate in International Volunteering' online course from Global Travel Academy

Our all-inclusive programs provide volunteers and interns with comprehensive pre-departure support services and training, as well as in-country program orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 support.

Scholarship FAQ

What is an alternative break?
An Alternative Break offers both individuals and groups the opportunity to support communities abroad as volunteers on specific social issues such as education, environmental, health and community projects. Not only do alternative break volunteers get to give back to a community that values their support, they can still gain all the experiences of a “traditional break” abroad; meeting new people, immersion in a new culture, and the opportunity to explore!

Who is eligible for the scholarship?
The scholarship is open to anyone of any nationality who is over the age of 18.

What if I don't know where I want to volunteer or intern?
You're not alone! If you know you want to volunteer or intern during your alternative break but aren't sure where yet, you can still apply for the scholarship. If you are selected as a finalist, the IVHQ or IAHQ teams will be happy to assist you in selecting a destination that's the best fit for you.

When can I travel to my program?
The Alternative Break Scholarship recipient must travel to their destination of choice before 30 February 2020.

I've already registered to volunteer with IVHQ, can I still apply for this scholarship?
Yes! We recommend securing your place on your chosen program and if successful, your registration and program fees will be refunded to you.
