As more travelers are choosing to volunteer abroad as a way of experiencing a new country whilst assisting a developing community, International Volunteer HQ is also receiving growing interest from families who wish to share this unique experience together.
In addition to hosting thousands of solo volunteers every year, International Volunteer HQ also specializes in placing families on our volunteer programs abroad.
Can I volunteer abroad with my children?
International Volunteer HQ offers a range of volunteer abroad programs suitable for parents who would like to volunteer abroad with their children.
International Volunteer HQ can help you select the volunteer abroad program best suited to the ages and abilities of your children and your travel desires.
Please note, children under the age of 18 years are able to volunteer abroad with a parent or guardian on any IVHQ program, with the exception of the Madagascar, Brazil and Colombia programs.
Where can my family volunteer abroad?
We recommend that families with children under the age of 15 look at our volunteer abroad programs which offer home-stay accommodation, rather than those which offer dormitory-style accommodation.
Our volunteer programs that can accommodate families together in home-stay accommodation include Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Kenya - Maasai, Morocco, Nepal, Peru - Cusco, Peru - Lima and Tanzania. In Bali, families can be accommodated together in private villa accommodation.
Please contact us if you would like to discuss the suitability of any of these volunteer abroad programs for your family.
Which type of volunteer projects are most suitable for families?
During your volunteer program, children and teenagers under the age of 18 will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
For families with young children, our Childcare projects are generally the most suitable volunteer projects, as these allow children to become involved and interact with the other children. A Conservation project may also be suitable for families with children who enjoy working outdoors and don’t mind getting their hands dirty!
Browse our wide range volunteer abroad programs to find one that appeals to you and your family.
How long can my family volunteer abroad for?
The flexibility of our volunteer abroad programs means you can choose to volunteer for anywhere between 1 week and 24 weeks. This allows you to fit a trip into your children’s school holidays or your working year.
You will have your weekends free to explore more of the host country and local culture. You also have the opportunity to take an organized tour or safari wtih a tour provider recommended to you by our local staff.
How do we apply to volunteer abroad as a family?
An online application will need to be submitted for each family member to volunteer abroad with IVHQ.
Each application must reference the name of the other family members in response to the question “Are you volunteering with a friend, relative or group?”. This allows us to ensure our local staff can place and accommodate your family together.
Each family member will need to pay a Registration Fee and Program Fee for your family’s chosen volunteer abroad program. Take a look at our program costs to see our range of affordable program fees.
Please note, the Bali program incurs a surcharge of US$200 per week per family for families volunteering with children 12 years and under to cover private accommodation and extra care during the program. This will be paid to our local staff upon arrival in Bali.
