Many schools in underprivileged areas of Mombasa are run on extremely tight budgets, but the education they provide is critical to helping give children opportunities to escape the poverty many of them have grown up in. Volunteers make up an important part of the education these schools provide, simply by being teaching assistants that can help students achieve more.
As a volunteer teacher in Mombasa, you’ll be based in community schools in slum-like areas around the city. You’ll help local teachers in daily classes in math, English, science, social studies, geography, history, art and physical education. Students will range in age from 4-15 years old.
This project is open to all volunteers with an interest in teaching, and you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage you to come prepared by completing relevant training, such as a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.
This project is not available during the school holidays, so if you apply during this time you will be switched to either Special Needs Care or Women’s Education, which are based in Nairobi.
