In areas of Naples, local children often spend their free time on the streets, without any adult supervision or opportunities for constructive activities. As a volunteer on the After School Care project in Italy, you’ll provide care and the chance to build on their education with after school activities.
Volunteers help to organize and run after school workshops and educational activities, incorporating music, art, cooking, sports, games and leisure activities. While some basic resources are available, you’ll need to use your initiative and creativity to arrange activities - if you’re able to bring your own resources, it’ll make things much easier.
This project is well suited to volunteers who enjoy working with children and supporting youth development outside the classroom. Strong organizational skills and the ability to improvise will be highly valuable on this project, as providing care to children in an unstructured environment can be challenging. However, the children are incredibly enthusiastic and grateful for the opportunity to learn from international volunteers.
As the project runs in the afternoon, you will have mornings free to plan for the day’s work. You will be volunteering alongside our local placement staff so you don’t need to be qualified or have teaching experience to join this project. Many students are new to learning English, so you should expect a language barrier at times. You’re welcome to take advantage of Italian language lessons offered by your local team, which will help you to communicate.
Please note that if you apply for the After School Care project during the school holidays (June - September), you’ll spend your time helping on a holiday camp.
