For people living in poverty, one of the biggest issues is wondering where their next meal is going to come from. Getting enough food can be unaffordable for many, but Belgium has a handful of initiatives designed to help feed people in need. These causes typically have low budgets, so often rely on volunteer support to continue their good work.
As a volunteer, you’ll help in food banks, soup kitchens and community centers, catering for people who are homeless, living in poverty or otherwise unable to provide regular meals for themselves. Your main roles are assisting with running sandwich distribution projects and preparing and serving breakfasts to refugees.
You can help with food preparation, cooking, cleaning, packing and distributing meals. Another important aspect of this project is interacting with the people receiving the meals, as the majority of them don’t have close connections with family or friends.
If you’re someone who is willing to work hard to help vulnerable people, this will be a rewarding project for you. Getting to see the impact of your contribution firsthand is often considered a highlight for volunteers.
As you’ll be volunteering alongside local placement staff, you don’t need to have any prior experience to participate.
