Volunteer Abroad Programs 2015

2015 marks IVHQ’s 8th year in hosting international volunteers (over 40,000 of them too)! With our affordable volunteer fees and trusted programs, we’re the world’s most popular volunteer organization with our IVHQers contributing over 3 million volunteer hours to date!

We’re always asked which are the best IVHQ volunteer programs, which is probably the most difficult question to answer, so we’ve listed a selection that are shaping up to be your most popular picks for 2015…

Volunteer in Fiji

“The Fiji Islands lure travelers with white sand beaches, blue waters, soft corals gardens, extreme sports and warm Fijian hospitality. Have a chance to experience the real Fiji and help local communities with our volunteer projects. Based in Suva, volunteers can work in rural schools on the Teaching, Kindergarten, Sports Education and Renovation projects. For a unique experience, volunteers can live with a rural community on the island of Ovalau, where they can work on the Organic Farming or Turtle Conservation projects. Volunteers based in Ovalau can spend their weekends relaxing by the sea, hiking in the pristine rainforest, taking day trips to one of the nearby white-sand islands and exploring the many pristine dive sites located off the island that are home to large mammals and big fish. Fiji has a unique culture and a laid back attitude that is truly infectious. Bula!” - Lydia van den Assum (IVHQ Pacific Program Manager)

Volunteer in Madagascar

“Experience a unique slice of paradise and come volunteer with IVHQ in Madagascar. Be a part of protecting endangered lemurs, rare and exotic plants, provide opportunities for locals to learn English, learn to dive and explore the Indian ocean and contribute to marine research on a global scale. Imagine all of this as well as living on a remote island getaway, immersing yourself in the local culture alongside other international volunteers. In your free time, sail around Nosy Be, exploring other hidden islands or take a refreshing dip in the Indian ocean in front of your island bungalow. Finally, end your days with a cool drink watching the sunset from a sun lounger.” - Louise Frame (IVHQ Africa Program Manager)

Volunteer in Cambodia

“From the moment you hop off the plane in Phnom Penh to the day you leave, you’ll always be in the presence of an infectious Cambodian smile and real Cambodian hospitality. If you’re after a volunteer destination where you’ll instantly feel comfortable, make new friends, and feel appreciated for your hard work, stop your search and apply to volunteer in Cambodia. You’ll find a genuine need for your help, whether in an understaffed and under resourced childcare center, or a local school with children eager to learn English from native English speakers. Don’t expect your weekends to be dull either, with volunteers traveling to the beaches of Sihanoukville, the stunning temples of Angkor Wat, or even to Cambodia’s neighbors of Vietnam and Thailand. It’ no wonder why Cambodia is one of IVHQ’s most popular programs.” - Jordan McFadyen (IVHQ Communications Manager)

I came here expecting to change other peoples’ lives, I didn’t realize simply how much my life would be changed. I’m forever thankful to IVHQ for having a program like they do Emily Marriott

Volunteer in Costa Rica

“It is understandable why Costa Rica is a popular holiday destination, with more than 100 different protected national parks, rainforests holding around 5% of the world’s total biodiversity, stunning beaches, adventure packed activities, quaint towns and vibrant friendly locals. Add volunteer work to the mix and there really is something for everyone. Costa Rica has plenty of affordable and often direct flight options for volunteers in North America, as well as a wide range of projects to choose from. With a central hub located in the vibrant city of San Jose, volunteers on this program can lend a much needed hand to placements in Construction and Renovation, Teaching English, Childcare, Special Needs and Medical. Additionally, volunteer opportunities such as Turtle Conservation are based on the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula or working with a local family on an organic coffee farm in Monteverde, your weeks can be spent applying all of your efforts into the local communities while your weekends can be spent relaxing on Manuel Antonio Beach or exploring the pristine lakes, in awe of Arenal volcano. The Costa Rica program is also one of three programs offered by IVHQ that allows volunteers to learn a new language, add volunteer experience to their resume, as well as gain university credit.” - Hannah Hill Parker (IVHQ Latin America Applications Manager)

The accommodation was EXCELLENT, INCREDIBLE, WONDERFUL, WOW! My host is in every way perfect for what you do! She cared for me, as if I was her daughter. I am just blown away! Liliya Kibitskaya

Volunteer in Kenya

“Kenya prides itself on being the “go-to” country in Africa and it should not be missed! With volunteer placements in and around Nairobi, as well as some further afield in Mombasa and opportunities to serve within traditional Maasai communities Kenya offers all you could ask for to fulfill that once in a lifetime dream-trip to Africa that you have always wanted to do. There is a wide range of volunteering projects available on our Kenya program including Teaching, Childcare, Special Needs, Sports Education, Women’s Education, Music and HIV/AIDS Work. There are also plenty of options for you to assist the local community in different ways, the local staff will have you involved in IDP outreach campaigns and feeding campaigns in the Kibera slum - the opportunities are endless. The travel and tour options won’t let you down either! With the Maasai Mara on Nairobi’s doorstep there are a some of the world’s best safari and tour options on offer for all volunteers! It will be hard to find some time to rest but if you do, Mombasa and Diani Beach are within reach for a relaxing weekend getaway!” - William Rowland (IVHQ Africa Program Manager)

The 3 months that I spent in Kenya were quite possibly the best 3 months of my entire life. I’ve learned so much about myself, about the Kenyan culture, and about a whole new world I never thought existed. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Allison O’Connor

Volunteer in Bali

“It is not common for part of a country to be more popular than the country itself. Bali achieves this and there are plenty of reasons why. You could say that Bali has it all, from some of the world’s cleanest waves to sculpted rice terraces and everything in between. Nestled in the relaxed cultural capital of Ubud, volunteers will find it hard not to unwind and embrace the refreshing atmosphere here. Along with the harmony of Ubud, you will experience the feeling of truly helping a community in need, whether you are on the Teaching English project to the Health Education project. For those wanting a Balinese Island feel, you will not need to look any further than the Turtle Conservation project on Nusa Penida. The accommodation is a special part of Bali with volunteers being accommodated in the traditional Balinese housing complex in a volunteer house or private villa, which offers a communal setting for everyone on the program to socialize and eat together. Mix all this in with the excellent activities that Bali offers, this is one volunteer program that you will not want to miss (or leave).” - Reeve Barnett (IVHQ Volunteer Manager)

I cannot recommend IVHQ and the Bali program highly enough! I think the fees were very fair and there was great food, good rooms and there was great company! Allison Loughran

Volunteer in Guatemala

“Guatemala is one of our most understated programs. It’s based in Antigua, where Spanish colonial relics are crumbling to the cobblestone streets and bursting with plant life taking back over, all surrounded by lush green vegetation and three sacred volcanoes. The history of Guatemala has made for a vibrant culture that celebrates music, food and folklore. Guatemala also boasts one of our largest range of projects, with 10 on offer, simply because there is that much need. Volunteers looking to make a social impact can consider Childcare, Teaching English, Caring for the Elderly or Medical work. The Turtle/Environmental Conservation and Animal Care projects give you the chance to work with animals, and the Lake Conservation, Eco-Agriculture and Construction and Renovation projects are great for those who want to work in hands-on environments. Aside from enjoying the sights and sounds abundant in Antigua, there are plenty of adventures to be had. From hiking to Tikal, climbing volcanoes, zip lining through forest and coffee plantations or even surfing in nearby El Salvador, there’s no room for boredom!” - Chelsea Green (IVHQ Latin America Program Manager)

The absolute best people I have ever met! :) I can’t wait to go back to Guatemala! And I am definitely volunteering abroad in the future again! Olivia Smith

Volunteer in South Africa

“South Africa is a country of diverse origins, cultures, languages and religions which is edged on three sides by nearly 3,000 kilometers of coastline. With the Indian Ocean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the country is strong on adventure, sport, nature and wildlife, and of course, volunteer travel. Volunteers in South Africa are able to help in local community schools assisting with Teaching, Sports Development and Computer Training or lend a caring and helping hand at local Childcare centers or get their feet wet on our Surf Outreach project. Volunteers in South Africa are lucky enough to be working in one of the 17 most megadiverse destinations in the world, there are not many other destinations where you can spend your weekends on safaris checking out majestic and intimidating animals such as rhinos, elephants, as well as smaller ‘cute’ ones such as meerkats, bush babies and bat-eared foxes.” - Claire Chambers (IVHQ Africa Program Manager)

Volunteer in Peru - Cusco

“Cusco is a magical city complete with history and beauty, nestled high in the scared valley and home to spectacular churches, Inca ruins and of course the launching pad for the ever majestical Machu Picchu. Volunteer projects are located in and around Cusco’s historical center with Teaching English, Childcare, Medical, Construction and Special Education volunteer projects available. The Jungle Conservation project, burrowed in the Amazon rain forest offers peace and tranquillity for the conservation-minded volunteer. Whilst the Andean Immersion others a unique opportunity to live and volunteer in a traditional Andean Quechua-speaking community even higher in the Sacred Valley.” - Daniel Sharp (IVHQ Volunteer Manager)

Volunteer Abroad Programs 2015 Volunteer Weekends in Peru

I would rate the local staff 10/10 (outstanding). I felt that my project was 100% suitable for me - I wanted to do construction and that’s exactly what I have done. As a result of volunteering through IVHQ, I keep appreciating what I have more and more Nota Nagy
